The book is written in a form that feels like Smokey is right there, puffing his pipe and telling his story. Should have a sub-title, "The World According to Smokey."

This book was written my Smokey dictating to his wife as she typed an really reads that way too Smokey's colorful sayings and humor keep me laughing every time I pick up the book. If you every have the greenies to buy it I highly suggest adding a copy to your library. Great stories from his 50 plus missions over Germany to the shop alligator and even a fist fight with Curtis Turner over some "hill country justice" after the 1955 Southern 500 where Smokey's car was deemed legal and Herb Thomas was declared the winner after several hours in the post race inspection barn.
A story that is refreshingly politically incorrect, historically antidotal, a great read. As a literary style I would term it “redneck Hemingway”.

Anyone who follows NASCAR or racing in general will love thei book. Very blunt and candid. True racing legend.

Smokey was a legend. But not a great writer. Or speaker. The book has a lot of interesting input into the life of a very colorful, and imaginative, person. But the read is slowed by grammatical errors and questionable punctuation. Not a fast read because of the written speed bumps but fascinating for any real gearhead.
