I couldn't give it a full excellent rating due to some quirks. first, go nagai is pretty much the unofficial father of horror anime. he's like george a. romero to night of the living dead and all those dead movies, but for anime horror. In the 80's, the original manga was practically a gothic masterpiece along with the fact that its almost comtemporary in how its a modern apocalypse story but still as its roots-a dramatic tragedy. with that said to show my appreciation for his work. lets dive into the guts. physically, its a nicely designed case for the whole collection. It does have a weak spine, but still a sturdy case. and plus-no tabbed nubs to hold discs, full fledged and proper disc holder. I've bought numerous collections with bad disc holders. whats the point of having a case to hold the disc if its going to just flop about inside the case and still get damaged??? so still, nice case. nice graphics to follow theme of series as well. 4 out 5 for the case.-1 for the weak spine. contents: some standard adv trailers, the original trailer, clean open and close, and some original artwork. if you love and even like the way nagai drew the series, much less any of his work, then you'll really get a kick from the artwork. lots of concepts for the devil lady and other characters. menu is a little different from most dvd menus in terms of looks, but it very much stays true to the theme and style of the series-gothic,horror,and dramatic.basic layout though 3 out of 5 for content-2 for more content story-think of the original story with akira fudo, but a female version...with some changes. first, the last names of both main characters are the same as the original. the demonic elements are less religious supernatural and more evolution/supernatural if that makes sense. and as a big bold move, our lovely heroine seems to prefer the soft and tender prensence of women over men. bit of a step from traditional stories, but traditions can get old so this is a very nice and interesting shift. like many of nagai's work, its ultra violent, gory, seductive in some parts, and at the core-almost philosophical. its like a dark version of seth rogan without pot, boobs, and crude jokes. questions of humanity, interpretation of one's soul, social reaction in society due to massive change to natural order and social structure. just few of things that are brought up throughout the series. despite the like of over the top super styled action of today's anime, its more dependent of its central story which I believe is the most important and relevant things in our viewing pleasure. bad point though: jun,our heroine as her "true form," the devil lady(or in japan-lady devilman) is just like the original, all clothes destroyed from the physical transformation and now has wings on head,a tail, claws, and now has some fur as well. With that, she's pretty much exposed a good bit. even a few times as just a human woman as well....no nipples.none whatsoever. I know that seems so ridiculous to focus on, but with the ultra violence, including acts with animal deaths, people, and children. but with all that, children deaths, too. NO nipples??? its just so weird and distracting at times. probably even more so then if they were always there. I'm sure there's good reason(fcc,tv ratings, etc.),but still. maybe some artistic licensing for her demonic form, but her human form,too???...sigh*,with that said and out of the way and despite that reason,I do still very much reccomend this. -OBRead full review
The propensity to be a devil is inside of all of us. As moral beings, we subconsciously or even directly battle our inner demons daily. Why? Perhaps so that we do not turn into monsters. Maybe being human is about having the ability to choose whether we want to succumb or triumph over these questions of goodness and evil. It seems this is the basis, along with a warped idea of evolution, that Devilman Lady explores. Dubbed as The Devil Lady in the Western world, this series manages to take campy horror and mix it in with deep psychological, biological, theological and societal themes. The result is an anime that is deliciously engaging. Devilman Lady is based of Go Nagai's Devilman franchise, but do not be put off by starting this series; it does not directly have anything to do with its predecessors save for a few cameos and references that barely add anything to the overall anime. This incarnation of Nagai's Devilman saga follows, well, a lady who is a Devilman. Sharp titling there. In Devilman Lady's Japan, Beasts are on the rise. These Beasts are humans who have evolved into vicious monsters. The human body is so passé. It is weak. It has stopped evolving. Not the Beasts though. Like marvellous (horrendous) specimens, they are the key to humanity's continued development. In a story that would make even Darwin fascinated, we follow Fudo Jun, an up and coming model who gets thrown into the world of the Beasts. Jun learns, in a harsh and horrible way, that she is not just a simple woman. Hell, she's not even a simple human being. She is a Devilman. A human that has not fully evolved into a Beast. Incomplete and imperfect, if you may. But this imperfection makes her the perfect tool for the government. They decide to use her to eliminate these monsters as she can be controlled. As aforementioned, this series evokes both camp and horror extremely well. It is an action-oriented anime, so expect a lot of fighting, but it marvellously mixes in so many genres, that it manages to be not only mindless entertainment but also an anime that you can ponder over. The storyline is cleverly crafted so that it manages to be both in your face but simultaneously subtle about its development. It is primarily episodic, and has a literal monster-a-day appeal. Each Beast is given a time in the spotlight, as we see the human in most of them before we see the monster. Their reasons for even turning into crazed monsters are intriguing; one man even turns into an eyeball monster because he's a voyeur photographer with stalker-like qualities. Campy enough for you as yet? However, while some of the Beasts have perverse reasons for their evolution, some tragically change, as seen by characters such as a little girl who has an unhealthy fascination with fire. An underlying romantic story exists as well in this anime. There really is something for everyone. No, not talking about the relationship Jun has with men--the one she has with her friend Kazumi. Their scenes provide the anime with some of its most human and touching moments. Shocking, terrifying, gross images will grace your screen, and unfortunately, the art does not express all this quite well. Given, the anime looks dated now, which is understandable as it was made in the 90s. It serves its purpose well enough, but this anime is not eye candy. In any respect. The Beasts each have some terribly horrifying (or downright ridiculous) designs. The animation is not exactly the best, and doRead full review

Very entertaining story with a female protagonist who did not want the powers and her evolution into a stronger more selfreliant individual. The retro look bothers some viewers not me.
