My husband and I checked it out (before buying it) several times to practice our French for a trip to Provence. We got to the point where we were speaking the lines along with the characters, (trying to get our accents just right). This is a totally charming movie with sympathetic characters. Not only that, but the music and the scenery are gorgeous. It is told from the perspective of an adolescent boy growing up in Marseille. His father is a schoolmaster, Mom stays at home and sews and visits with her sister "Tante Rose." He loves his mother in a very innocent way, and the way he interprets and tries to explain things to his brother and the viewer is quite drole. Most of the film takes place at their vacation house in the mountains. The cast expands here and all sorts of adventures occur. This is a beautiful movie. If you like France, especially Provence, you will love this film!Read full review
Marcel spends a summer vacation with his family. He grows up adoring his father and mother, but discovers, alas, that his father is not the infallible, perfect human being he thought he was. Nevertheless, the father manages to redeem himself, mostly by chance, in the eyes of Marcel. A very moving, beautifully narrated film appropriate for the entire family.
