I actually purchased the e-book for my wife, who had asked for it on her Christmas list. I have not read the book myself, so I cannot say whether I would or would not recommend it or whether the content is compelling. The download was accessible shortly after I placed my order, so that part was good.

It's hard to review this book. I've read project Hail Mary and the Martain by this author loved them both. They seemed to be an act of love on authors part. This book seems more like it's his new job which it is. The flavor and flow seems different maybe because their working for a pay day. Book is not bad might rate 2.5 stars no option by ebay to split the difference. to me it's closer to 2 than 3 so went with 2.

I loved ‘The Martian.’ I saw the movie before reading the book, so was able to thoroughly enjoy both for what they were. Weir’s pithy dialogue and grounded scientific basis created a vivid world in which I could envision us in my lifetime. The main character, alone, afraid, but determined not to give up on himself and on his mission, made me hate turning the final page. You know that’s the mark of a great book. ‘Artemis’, sadly, is not ‘The Martian.’ Artemis is young adult fiction, dressed up for prom. It looks older, and wished it were older. But isn’t. The main character, is plucky, like the protagonist of Weir’s first work. But she has a hollowness to her. This character, it feels, was designed for a CW television series. Easy to like, interesting to follow, but in the end, flimsy. Weir’s attempt to create a crook/screw-up with a heart of gold felt like every other attempt. Compared to the excellent characterization done in his first work, the female protagonist of Artemis is hollow. Weir’s plot centers around a ‘heist’ conceit but falls short of the really good heist stories. Maybe because the heist genre has been done so well by cinema, I expected the same elements in this work? I don’t know. But the convoluted path the reader follows to the end of the story leaves a lot to be desired. This one got a way from him, I think. I eagerly await Weir’s third work. I enjoy reading him (even Artemis) but feel like Artemis was rushed. If it had more time to ‘bake’ and grow into a better work, I think it would have met the (high) standards readers had for the second novel. If you like science fiction, and haven’t read ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress,’ by Heinlein, do so. A better work than Artemis that also envisions everyday life on the Moon.Read full review
