i'll never understand people who pan productions from this era and 'school,' if you will, by complaining about low budget, cheap-looking sets, and the like---of course, "Edward the King" has its share of these minor weak points--it's a video production!--from 1973---and video was still improving by leaps and bounds, practically by the month, back then....but, all that nonsense is less than trivial when held up against the sheer genius of this over-all production...sorry, but i'm not going to go into all the raves about the writing, and casting, and acting, and directing---and the costumes?--my God; they are truly amazing....no; if you want to experience the 'best-of-the-best' simply get your hands on this 4 disc set----you will learn an amazing amount about one of the most fascinating periods of Western Civilization, but won't even be aware of any tedious history lessons, because you'll be totally captivated by one of the best mini-series ever to be seen on the small screen---Read full review

Another and unique look at the life and times of Queen Victoria. This dramatization is quite old now and most of the actors well known for later roles. One of the aspects of this series is it's ability to bring out the very tightly knit group that were the Royal Houses of Europe of the time. This series of events could not happen now but is fascinating to watch and see unfold. For the younger viewer there are possibly other adaptations of this Queen's life that would hold more current meaning to them but for the older generation, especially those who lived nearer to these times, it is spell binding. Allowances must be made for the earlier time when this was made and therefore the quality of the production. Remember CGI did not exist in those days neither a lot of other technological assists to the actors of today. We enjoyed this work thoroughly.Read full review

I saw this series when it first aired. I had just recently read the biography on which it was based, so it was even more fascinating. I was happy to find it reissued in DVD format and turned to ebay in hopes of a good price. Watching it all again was refreshing and entertaining. The basic story line of the heir to the throne waiting most of his life is happening again right now with Prince Charles. It also happened for George IV and gave us "The Regency Period." All three have many things in common so "Edward the King" can be informative to all. The other aspect that makes this series interesting is the goings on all across Europe leading up to World War I. "Kaiser Bill," the last of the Romanovs, Victoria and Albert, and Edward VII himself are brought to life in a way that helps us to understand just how radical a change was taking place. It also shows us that no matter how glamorous their lives were compared to the "common folks," they still had many of the same problems, hopes, fears, tragedies, etc. as everyone else. This series is both entertaining and enlightening. A good chart of the British royal family and its "connections" will help a great deal in sorting out just which player is which.Read full review
It was soooo perfect to the last detail. Everything was copied so well. Everything was accurate to a fault. The set is delightful and very eye opening as to the closeness of the Royals. Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth II are second cousins through the Greek and British lines. But hell, EVERYONE is GERMAN. What a splendid performance by all. Now for the only negative I could find. The Coronation of Edward VII,as he sat on the Imperial Throne used the WRONG CROWN!! Now if this was an American production I could understand, but for GOD's Sake YOU ARE BRITISH. The Coronation Crown is the Crown of St. Edward the Confessor, the GOLD Crown, not The Diamond ladden Imperial State Crown, which is used when the Monarch address Parliment. Edward looked silly with that bauble crown when the crown of his heriditary Right is reflected in the St. Edwards Crown. To many who don't know that error seems small but for us Royals we know better and WE ARE NOT AMUSED.Read full review
If you love British history and great acting and don’t mind 1970’s production values, this is THE best Queen Victoria/Edward VII you can find.
