When they remade YOURS, MINE AND OURS it was no longer politically correct to have large families, so they changed Helen Beardsley to an adoptive Mom. Nothing wrong with adoption (I have 6 adopted kids myself), but the reality is that this film is based on a TRUE story that took place at a time when strict Catholics did not use birth control and therefore it wasn't unusual to have 8 or 10 biological children. Blending them into one family was challenging, even without the children creating deliberate schemes to sabotage the blended family. This original version, starring Lucille Ball & Henry Fonda, is more realistic than the remake. It sticks closer to the Beardsleys' true story (as related in the book WHO GETS THE DRUMSTICK?). Rather than creating cute but Hollywood-ized obstacles, it shows the true day-to-day stresses of feeding and supervising 18 children. It's not as funny as the remake, and kids may not like it as much, but I guarantee parents will prefer this version! Seeing Lucille Ball pregnant was a bit of a stretch, since she was about 60 when the film was made, but I can suspend my disbelief because, hey, it's Lucy (I love her in any role!), and because of the excellent speech Henry Fonda makes to the kids when he's taking pregnant Lucy to the hospital. It's about how love and family and the day-to-day struggles are what's important and what bring us closer. A good clean movie that the whole family can watch together, especially if it's a large, blended family!Read full review
I really did enjoy this older movie with favorites Lucille Ball & Henry Fonda. I always enjoy seeing Lucy in her movies. I'd also recommend 'Stone Pillow'. Lucy is always so comical and entertaining no matter whet she does and no one can do comedy like her. Yours, Mine and Ours is a great family picture. You'll enjoy watching it along side your children and grand kids as well and I'm sure they'll always have fond memories of that time, as they reflect back, of watching this movie with you. It's one of those pictures that you seem to always remember the first time you saw it and who you were with. Kind of like 'Titanic'. And it's one movie you'll enjoy seeing again and again.
A great movie showing how it is possible to remarry when both partners have a large number of children under the age of 18. There is no vulgar language nor scenes, thus, excellent family values displayed!

A classic movie for not only us old time movie buffs, but for todays younger generation. Lucille Ball, a nurse at the Naval hospital, and Henry Fonda, a Navy Officer (who were both recently widowed), are paired up by a mischievously good friend Darrel, played by Van Johnson who is concerned about both their future coping with their unfortunate losses and proceeds to set up a date for them to meet. What neither the couple know about each other is that Mom, (Lucille Ball), and Dad, (Henry Fonda) are the proud parents of EIGHT, that's (8) and TEN, Yeah !, you heard right, (10), respectively, mostly adolescent brew that long for their departed progenitor. Lucille Ball with her uniquely comical way, and Henry Fonda, who is hypnotizing on all the movies he's appeared on will have you rolling on your seats. What obviously arises is a totally hysterically directed movie that is definitely made "for not only the young at heart", but the young as well, at least that's what my 14 year old implies. We highly recommend this movie to everyone and our hopes that you'll enjoy it as we surely did. Hope this review helps you on your decision about purchasing this movie. PS: Buy it, See it with your family and laugh it up... Thanks for your attention... Danny...Read full review
This movie is funny, romantic, heartwarming and feels real. A good mix of chaos and quiet. I especially liked it since I come from a big family. I couldn't relate to the newer remake with Dennis Quade which seemed too unrealistic and disconnected from what really big families are like. I liked how the father was manly and the mother was womanly in this one. We don't see much on TV now where the dad takes control of situations and mom supports him in a healthy way. Sometimes we forget things could be different until we watch old movies like this. Its engaging to see how they make the new family work. We've watched it many times.
