Great series from HBO. Finally an opportunity to see the teams, players and stadiums of the long gone past - in full color! People and places usually only seen in black and white photographs and newsreels now as they really were. And since much of the film was originally taken by teammates/club personnel you get a sense of what these people were really like. Not the faces they put on for the public but their real personalities. You see not only the stars and players of the day but some greats of yesteryear like Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner and others. Not only is this collection fun to watch but it's an amazing historical reference. You get to see the Green Monster when it was new, what the players did with their gloves between innings and the actual full color uniforms of the day, among other revelations. A must set for the true baseball fan's collection!Read full review

I enjoyed the nostalgic feel of "When It Was a Game". It features amateur movies taken by fans. The movies center around baseball players at work and at play. The movies begin in the late 1930s and end during the 1950s. (I was surprised to see they are in color.) I found it interesting to hear the "old-timers" talk about how they felt about the game, the fans, the team owners and each other. "When It Was a Game" is a bit of a misnomer. The retired players repeatedly mention that it was their job. They knew they could be replaced at any time. They played hard every day, every game. I think even a casual baseball fan will enjoy seeing Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Leo Durocher, and all of the baseball pioneers. I am glad I purchased the set.
Back in the day, baseball was a game, nit a business and you can see it in this collection. oh how i wish for the old days of guys having fun can only caring about playing the game rather than where they can exploit themsolves for the most money.

The story of baseball from the early 1900's, how it has changed or stayed the same. I like this set because of the footage of the old greats in baseball. I purchased this as a gift for a baseball lover that had the first episode on a VHS tape that was getting very worn. If you know a person that enjoys baseball, is intrested in the greats that shaped the game, how it was before the night games, etc then this is the set for you. Footage of Babe Ruth and every Hall of Fame inductee since baseball began.
Product arrived as I wanted it.
