I have never seen a film so poorly produced in my life as well as a story that really let me down, towards the end, with the most miserable ending I've EVER seen. The acting was so atrocious, that the only way anybody on the screen should even CONSIDER seeing an Oscar is if somebody else is using it as a club, hammering it on their heads to stop the sounds of bad line-deliveries. I don't know if the director didn't know how to lead them or whatever the excuse, but Kindergarten recital plays have better thespian performances in them than this waste of theater space. The only good actor in the whole film was the child, even though the director should have also tried a few more takes on some scenes that this adorable kid kinda' looked like he got bored in. Madonna? I've seen her do some incredible performances... this by far was not one of them. And our male lead? WOW... I just don't have the same respect for Rupert as an actor, though he did pull something out towards the end of the film. By the way... he SERIOUSLY needs to ask his agent to stop giving him gay roles in what was supposed to be a romantic comedy. He did great in "My Best Friend's Wedding," and then totally crapped out (except some parts in the end) as another gay best friend of a woman in this. The director's publicist must have gotten payed VERY well (along with the cast/crew), in order for him to get such accolades for this trash. This film looked like a film student's first draft of his/her very first class project. The camera angles stunk (Just how many times are we required to look directly into the eyes of each cast member in an extreme close-up shot?); some of the scenes didn't have an artsy-fartsy shaking camera effect... the damn cameraman just couldn't hold still (maybe he had to take a leak and the piss-poor director wouldn't let him go until the scene was shot); and I've never seen so many bad frame compositions as is in this piece of... something. Now, the story... It really started off kinda' well and at least you liked ALL the characters involved. Then, all of a sudden it jumps about 6-7 years ahead without any flow or warning and that's when it went south. By the time it ends, a person with any parental skills, love, compassion, heart and a conscience ends up HATING Madonna's character for what she did to her "best friend" as well as the child, even attacking Rupert's character when he had no choice but to defend himself in court... and yet people made her character out to be some kind of heroine (such as the talent, taste and moral ignored director)??? Madonna's character was nothing but pure EVIL by the end of the picture, and yet other devil-worshipers felt she was in the right??? COME ON!!! There were also MASSIVE holes in the story that kept ya' getting lost everytime you thought you might have finally gotten a grasp of it once again. I could go on and on again about this film experience, but I'd end up vomiting the little bit of popcorn I WAS able to eat before my stomach could take no more at this horror, which surely wasn't listed as a horror film (but shoulda' been). In short, I not only give this film 2 thumbs down, but also all my toes and everything else that protrudes on me is pointing down in opinion of it. If ya' really want to waste almost 2 hours of your life on this film, and a butt-load of therapy afterwards, don't waste your money on even renting it... download it off the Internet and format your computer afterward.Read full review
This was the first Rupert Everett movie I have not liked. It was an awful soap opera like story. When Abbie(Madonna) can't get her personal life together she ends up sleeping with her gay friend (Rupert) and getting pregnant. The "friend" relationship works well for them both until Abbie falls in love with someone(Benjamin Bratt). Their unconventional family is put to the test. The movie people want you to believe that this is a warm and funny film.....it misses on all points. It is even condescending at times. You are wondering how many times Rupert is going to keep telling Madonna she is beautiful......it plays like some bad B movie. Madonna and Rupert have made some wonderful movies (apart from each other).....this wasn't one of them.
