Out of all the mice I've used, including regular mice, a crappy vertical mouse which had the scroll wheel stop functioning (Lugulake, don't buy!), and the Logitech Marble mouse (not very ergonomic), this is the best one I've come across so far. The shape of the mouse allows your hand to rest much more comfortably than almost every other mice. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, search up "Handshoe mouse" and imagine a better version of that where you don't have to move your arms or the mouse. I move the trackball with the upper halves of my index finger and middle finger, while my ring and pinky finger rest perfectly on the back and forward buttons, which are to the right of the trackball (looking at the mouse with the logo facing upwards [not upside down]). The scrolling wheel is in the perfect position; the thumb, stronger than the index, is much more suitable than the index finger to use the scrolling wheel due to how much use it gets. The use of any other finger for the scroll pales in comparison to the thumb now that I see it in hindsight. I'm glad I got this mouse (which commands the highest price out of all the ergonomic mice I've seen of 600$+ new on Amazon) instead of the other well known ergo mice like the Logitech Trackman FX, which lacks a scroll wheel, and the Logitech Trackman Cordless, which doesn't seem to have as ergonomic a shape and has the scroll wheel in the index position instead of the thumb position. It also surprised me that even though the mouse is obviously old, it still functions perfectly. Though the left click has somewhat of a weaker click than your typical mouse, it's to be expected of an old mouse and you get used to it and eventually stop noticing. I haven't ever used this mouse with regular bearings, but the scrolling (with cubic zirconia) is very smooth and more than adequate. I think for casual single player games like Skyrim, it would be perfect. Competitive online games probably won't suit this mouse because a trackball is harder to do quick mouse movements with. I use this mouse with the "Truly Ergonomic Keyboard" and I think I found the perfect combination. The small size of the keyboard allows me to get my mouse closer and not have to stretch my arms as far out. In summary, you should probably get this mouse ASAP (and probably from this person for the cubic zirconia bearings and refurbishment) before the price gets even crazier. Hopefully manufacturers get smart and start making more of these.Read full review

I had one of these when they first came out and loved it ever since. bought this upgraded one and it does work better. The ball moves freely and very smooth and the buttons all work great. The wheel has a nice tight feel to it and Windows 10 recognized it and configured it. I'm about to send my old one in and have that upgraded as well. I was skeptical at first but after buying this and using it, I HIGHLY recommend buying one.

There are really no "cons" with the TrackBall Explorer. They should, however update their drivers as on many occasions, the cursor movements are slow even when I set it to move "fast." It MAY not be the fault of the driver, it MAY be due to some of installed software base or to the many antivirus, antimalware scanners that I've install to safeguard my PC. It's JUST like Microsoft, they either come out with a fantastic device or purchased pieces of software (e.g., R:Base and FoxPro) from another third-party developers and soon after, they kill it. The TrackBall Explorer is one damn good pointing device. I wish Microsoft will introduce another, but this time a wireless version with the SAME interface and form factor! I really SHOULDN'T say anything good about the Microsoft TrackBall Explorer as it MIGHT drive up the bidding prices on eBay!!!!!!!!Read full review

I have been using a Microsoft Trackball Explorer for 14 years. My family purchased one new back in the day and I replaced it with a slightly used one a few years back, also from Ebay. I do a lot of gaming on my computer combined with heavy editing work which means my mouse takes a beating. My last two trackballs had become noticeably less responsive in both games and general use. I was wary with the price tag being as high as it is (but I also get it considering they don't make these anymore and the work that went into it) but it was worth it. I played some FPS games right after plugging it in and I could notice the response right away. I actually had to adjust to how smooth everything was and how nice and responsive the clicks of the buttons felt! I played the best I had in I don't know how long. There are some diehard Microsoft Trackball Explorer fans out there who are still hoping and wishing and praying for a new model of this glorious piece of tech but until that magical day happens, this is the best thing possible.Read full review

The ability for the pointer to be controlled by fingers rather than a thumb makes for faster and more precise mouse work (small motor muscles versus larger motor muscles). Though the mouse consumes more desk space when stationary, because it does not move and the angle of the larger platform of mouse can be adjusted by placing bumpers under it (front or back of the bottom) to change the angle and minimize carpal tunnel (something you cannot do with a conventional mouse). The mouse provides rest comfort for the hand, which helps make the pointing more precise. They are easily rebuilt, and parts are available. The mouse is no longer supported by Windows 10, but the driver can be found online. This allows you to customize the button functionality.
