The runaway success of “Halloween” allowed John Carpenter to release two of his most influential genre classics: the eerie ghost story “The Fog” and the urban apocalyptic thriller “Escape from New York.” However, he along with producer Debra Hill would return for an ambitious sequel that would further explore the origins of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Picking up where the original film left off, injured and traumatized Laurie (played again by Jamie Lee Curtis) has been admitted to the Haddonfield Memorial Hospital after an ordeal with The Shape. Only she doesn’t know that the merciless Michael has survived and is on the hunt for his quarry. Anxious to apprehend him at all costs, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) soon comes to the conclusion that Michael wanted more than revenge on his mind… “Halloween II” would have a much bigger budget than its processor and a major studio (Universal) behind the production. The directing duties would be handed to Rick Rosenthal who provides plenty of gripping set pieces without being too exploitative or too gory. For example, the Jacuzzi scene when Michael raises the hot water temperature to drown a hospital nurse is as spine-chilling as the first scene in “Halloween.” Though functioning as co-producer and co-writer on the sequel, Carpenter and composer Alan Howarth recreate the original score this time with synthesizers. In spite of the minor changes, their score succeeds in retaining the tension-filled suspense. Dean Cundey’s masterful camerawork without a doubt sets the sequel apart from most of the cheap horror films that are being released. If you already own the bare-bones edition of this film try and pick-up the Scream Factory edition of “Halloween II”. Not only does it include two commentaries, featurettes and deleted scenes, but it also contains the TV version of the film.Read full review
