So far the printer was good and easy to set up. The black ink was not good, but fortunately I had one from the Printer i was replacing so it worked out.

The DeskJet 5500 may well be the most versatile, robust, and efficient Printer produced by HP in the last Decade. Considering the wide array of Cartridges that it recognizes and utilizes, Users are not constrained to the typical two or three numbers commonly assigned to other Models. I have successfully printed using HP-21, 27, 54, and 56 Black; along with any combination of HP-22, 28, 57 Tri-Color, and HP-58 Photo Cartridges. When installing another Cartridge, the Printer will initiate a Clean & Prime utility by default; thus making the setup more User-friendly. Simple Three-Button Controls add to the ease of operation. Parallel & USB Connections are an addtional Plus. While cleaning waste ink (Shoepolish) from the internal Spitoon is not for the average User, keeping it and the Wipers may be the only real necessary maintence required for extended use of this marvelous machine.Read full review
This is an excellent. I needed a good ink jet printer in a pinch and purchased the HP 5550. The results you get from this printer are amazing when you consider the cost of the printer. The printer comes with a disk which makes it so easy to install. At the end of the installation there is a printer test photo. The resolution is outstanding. These days most printers have you by the cartridges. While the printing supplies for the printer are priced a little high you only need a maximum of two cartridges. Not four as other brands call for. The printer is a delicate workhorse. It is not a 25 pound nine pin printer that you could play basketball with (if it could bounce) and it still printed. The HP5550 needs a little care and maintenance. It will serve for years.
I'm checking out ebay to get a used HP Deskjet 5550 as I loved my first one that has now slowed to a crawl when printing. I got 29600 pages out of it!!! What I love best about it is the front loading paper slot. I print checks and other odd things once in a while and don't like that the newer printers all force you to open a paper tray to insert your paper. Or if they do allow other paper, it is in back and very inconvenient. Dislikes: It does have limited bottom margins which cuts things off now and then. But most software nowadays will fit-to-page. Can't print borderless photos but my All-in-One does that.
The Deskjet 5550 may be the most versitile, flexible, and productive model HP has produced in the last dozen years. Print quality is superb, functionality most definately User-Friendly, and durability is outstanding. While most Printers are purposefully limited to two or three Cartridge choices, this unit will print the HP-21, 27, 54, 56 black; 22, 28, 57, 58 color/photo types, just to note those we have tried. Be gentle, keep it clean, and it should last longer than one would expect from the newer, 'throw away' models.
