Realmente parece que no queremos envejecer ni llegar a longevos. Desde que tenemos uso de razón escuchamos comentarios descorazonadores sobre los viejos, sus problemas y enfermedades, la carga que suponen para el resto de las personas. A lo largo de nuestra vida no hay ni un solo comentario en la sociedad que nos diga que envejecer sea una fortuna, algo que debemos lograr si queremos alcanzar la felicidad. Las personas ocultan su edad para parecer más jóvenes, hacen tratamientos para rejuvenecer, se ponen ropa y abalorios que les hacen parecer más jóvenes, y sonríen abiertamente cuando alguien les asegura que parece más joven de lo que en realidad es. Nadie dice nada halagador sobre ser viejo, y eso que de vez en cuando nos felicitan cuando cumplimos los 90 años. Pero es una felicitación hipócrita porque realmente ellos se alegran de no tener esos 90 años. El envejecimiento se asocia a una disminución de la vitalidad, y aunque no se puede evitar envejecer, sí podemos evitar llegar a ser viejos prematuramente, del mismo modo que podemos intentar llegar a cumplir la mayor cantidad posible de años en plenitud. El envejecimiento normal se diferencia del patológico (no natural), en que mientras el primero supone la llegada de la sabiduría, la paz de espíritu, el control de nuestras emociones negativas y un lento declive que no nos impide disfrutar de la vida, en el segundo solamente existe dolor, tristeza, y pérdida manifiesta de las facultades físicas e intelectuales. Envejecer es un hecho aparentemente irreversible, pero podemos cuidar de nuestro cuerpo de forma tan óptima que apenas percibamos los cambios, consiguiendo así un continuo proceso de desarrollo, nuevas oportunidades, intereses y cambios de perspectiva sobre la vida que la pueden hacer cada día más interesante. Desdichadamente, todos los mensajes que recibimos y queremos escuchar con agrado están relacionados con la juventud, y ninguno con la fortuna de llegar a viejos. Como hemos dicho, lo más frecuente es asociar ser viejo con el dolor, la invalidez, la soledad y la dependencia, y estos mensajes desalentadores llegan hasta la última célula de nuestro cuerpo, ocasionando un deseo general de no querer llegar a viejos. Esta programación interna sobre los aspectos negativos de la vejez se afianza año tras año a nivel cerebral y celular, ocasionando lo que se denomina como muerte celular programada o apoptosis; pero esto que es un fenómeno natural para la renovación de las especies, el ser humano lo acelera hasta el punto en que logra acortar su vida entre 30 y 40 años. Puesto que no hay nada que nos indique que llegar a centenario está relacionado con la felicidad y la plenitud, lo mejor es morirse rápidamente cuando nuestras arrugas nos indiquen que ya han pasado los suficientes años de vida. Por eso, el primer requisito para llegar a cumplir 120 años es...desear cumplirlos, y desearlo intensamente todos los días de nuestra vida. El primer y más importante paso ya está dado; los demás, ahora los veremos. La clave está en que busquemos cuáles son nuestras motivaciones, nuestros motores para seguir viviendo, porque la vida merece la pena vivirla, disfrutando cada edad, y al llegar a esa etapa de nuestra vida que llaman vejez ser conscientes de que todavía nos quedan muchos años por delante como para sentarnos en un rincón esperando pasivamente a la muerte. El objetivo a largo plazo, al desarrollar nuestro proyecto de vida, es mejorar nuestra calidad de vida, es decir, llegar a experimentar un sentimiento de bienestar psicofísico y socioeconómico en el que confluyan tanto factores personales o individuales (salud, independencia, satisfacción por la vida, autoestima...), como factores socioambientales (amigos, familia, naturaleza, nuevos estudios e intereses...).
