Remember when horror movies used to be scary? I mean, make you jump out of your seat scary? It seems the director of "The Collector" can't remember either as he (like Eli Roth) has substituted scares for gore. Oh well... This movie is stupid on so many levels, I don't know where to start. I want to give a whole bunch of examples, but I don't want to include too many spoilers here, so I will just give you the general gist of the movie. An ex-con is desperate for cash, he is working on a house as a laborer and decides to come back at night and rob the family of the house by cracking their safe and stealing a large gem. Unfortunately a maniac called "The Collector" as also targeted the same family, the collector like to "collect people" (he ALWAYS collects one) and torture them, he also like to booby trap their houses so they can't escape. (but why would he rig the house to kill people if he ALWAYS collects one?) Now lets try and ignore the fact that the collector is a super-fast worker who can booby trap an entire house in a matter of HOURS without being noticed by anyone, he also apparently carries a lot of his gear with him (mantraps, acid, throwing knifes, fishhooks - the usual stuff) the ex-con who is at the house to rob the family, suddenly decides to play hero and save them instead (talk about a conflicted hero) except he can't find the cute little seven year old girl, and neither can the collector, and yet somehow she manages to keep hidden the entire movie while avoiding ALL booby traps in the process. There is not a lot of plot (it's a horror film, I can accept that) there are very little scares (boo!) but don't worry, there are loads and loads of close up shots of people getting gutted, lips being sewn together, fingers chopped off and various animals getting sliced into pieces/burned alive, so that makes it a good horror movie, right? If you are a fan of "Hostel" and the like (at least Hostel had a good premise) then you might like this film, just try and ignore the stupidity of everyone and everything involved here. Oh yeah, and I watched this on Blu Ray, there was no bookmarking option and NO SUBTITLES! sure, that may not be a big deal to a lot of people, but I watch movies at night and I don't want to disturb my wife, so I have the sound down low and leave the subtitles on... except with this one, I can't believe in this day and age a movie does not come with subtitles, sheesh!Read full review
First of all let me start out by saying this is an excelent movie. It is better than Saw in so many ways. The movie is about a contractor who breaks into a clients house to get money he needs to save his family from loan sharks. Little doe he know the Collector is already in the house. He tries to escape through a window but is stopped by a gullitine like trap made from boards and razors. The contrator quickly figures out that the family is still in there too. I dont want to spoil anything for you but I will say this. The traps are much more simple but still ingenious and the villain every bit as cunning as Jigsaw a.k.a. John Kramer. Now I'm not saying you have to like Saw to like this movie but there are some similarities aside from the director. There are some hilarious parts in this movie. Not because their bad but in a good way. There are many twist and the ending sets it up for a sequel while still being mostly conclusive. Now that being said a sequel was annouced to be done and released after the Saw movies are finished up which is roumored to be this year. I will definetly recommend this movie though I warn you there is gore and one scene of a quick boob shot. I cant wait for the sequel.Read full review
