This is a terrible movie in that Jeff Goldblum has too much monopoly time on the screen, and Rowan Atkinson makes do with his traditional slapstick performances. Ems Thompson on the other hand, dear dear Emma, the greatest of actresses Britain has ever produced gives us a real prize indeed! We get a prolonged elongated scene with Emma doing a topless tumble with Goldblum which leads to quite some magic moments. I would have paid a small fortune after mortgaging my house to see Emma this way, however darn it, Goldblum just doesnt deserve to hand her a lousy script so he can star in his self indulgence based on nothing more than having a spoon stuck in his mouth. (some people are just born lucky what can I say!)
A comedy that has a distinctly British flavor! This movie keeps me laughing from beginning to end every time I watch it (and that's been quite a few times). Rowan Atkinson ("Mr. Bean") is in a role unlike anything else he's ever done, and the same can be said for Emma Thompson. Jeff Goldblum portrays Dexter, the 'Tall Guy' straight man to Rowan Atkinson in a very long-running and successful broadway comedy show in which he is abused, humiliated and under-appreciated. By chance, Dexter meets and falls in love with Kate, a nurse (Emma Thompson) but is too shy to ask her out, so he subjects himself to multiple episodes of (hilarious) unnecessary medical treatment just to try to be near her. Eventually, they do become a couple and Dexter finds new employment as the title role in an ill-conceived but wildly successful musical based on the life of John Merrick, the 19th century 'Elephant Man.' But with the success comes temptations that could ruin the relationship with his new love, and buried under all the makeup, he finds he has no more identity in his new role as he did taking abuse in his old one. The film's plot is rich with minor twists and numerous very colorful and hilarious characters, but you must pay attention or you might miss a few lines of dialogue out of the blue that could have made you laugh until your ribs ached. There is some profanity (mostly from Rowan Atkinson) and nudity (the funniest love scene I have ever seen, bar none!), and the film manages to demonstrate some good messages about friendship, fidelity and self-worth. Watch for the director in a cameo role as a drunken fan at the 'Elephant!' opening night after-party. Even just thinking about this movie puts a smile on my face at the end of a hard day.Read full review
I love this movie. I don't know why it isn't easier to find.

Jeff Goldblum is The Tall Guy, a young American actor living in London. He suddenly loses the gig he's been working for 7 years, and has to find new work. At the same time, he's fallen for local nurse Kate (Emma Thompson). One of the highlights of the movie is when he accepts an acting job in a new West End Musical -- based on 'The Elephant Man.' Great send up of shows like 'Les Miserables, 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Jekyll & Hyde.' It's a quirky, strange little movie -- with some random nudity in it that I find a bit jarring. Overall, it's tons of fun.
The quality of the disc was fine. But I hated the movie. I bought it because it was supposed to be a comedy with Rowan Atkinson; but Rowan Atkinson played a very small part. Too much overt sex. It certainly was a surprise to see Emma Thompson in a dumb movie like that one.
