If you enjoy the TV show GLEE, the movie series BRING IT ON, or any comedy ... If you enjoy the TV show GLEE, the movie series BRING IT ON, or any comedy underdog film (such as DODGEBALL), you will probably like PITCH PERFECT and its sequels. That being said, the comedy is offensive and many plot points do not make sense. Films that are clearly intended as over-the-top parodies (DODGEBALL) can get away with racial, sexist, and overweight jokes, because it is obvious that everything is exaggerated; DODGEBALL is not taking place in the real world, and it is clear that much of what happens is supposed to be ridiculous. PITCH PERFECT, like BRING IT ON, is a comedy set at a school where a competitive team (in this case, acappella singers rather than cheerleaders) takes its competition seriously and really wants to win. In the original BRING IT ON, captain Torrance rules her fellow cheerleaders with an iron fist, and isn't crazy about the new, unconventional cheerleader she is forced to accept when a squad member is injured. But when it becomes clear that the new girl's style offers the only chance of victory, Torrance accepts change. In PITCH PERFECT, the acappella team loses the finals because one girl, Aubrey, projectile vomits on stage. The following year, all the team members have graduated except for Aubrey & Chloe. They must recruit eight new girls and redeem their team. It makes absolutely no sense that Aubrey insists on the exact same costumes & the exact same song that will forever be associated, in the acappella community, with projectile-vomiting, nor that Chloe goes along with it. Then, when the new girls are unveiled, someone calls them "barnyard animals" when only two are plus-sized; the rest are slim beauties like Aubrey and Chloe. At the competition, the announcers make snide remarks about the girls' looks, which is not only unprofessional but inaccurate, since they are all attractive, including the two larger girls, and their looks have nothing to do with their singing. One of the larger girls is called Fat Amy, and the other is a lesbian; these attributes are mentioned constantly, as if being overweight and being gay are things to laugh about. Beca, the new girl who tries to modernize the group, is an aspiring DJ, which is fine, but the big conflict between Beca and her would-be boyfriend is that he likes movies and she hates them. They're both singers who work at the campus radio station, so they have a lot in common; would the film disagreement be such a deal-breaker? Worst of all, toward the end Aubrey embraces her projectile-vomiting as some sort of empowerment and vomits during practice. The other girls slip & slide around in the vomit and eventually Aubrey agrees to accept Beca's ideas. I think this is supposed to be funny or meaningful but it was just disgusting!
