Chuck Noland is Mr. Fed-Ex. He eats, sleeps, and lives Fed-Ex. To him, TIME, is the most important thing in the world. He is obsessed with saving time and making Fed-Ex the fastest way to ship to anywhere in the world. All of this dedication comes with a price though. His long time girlfriend, Kelley, played by Helen Hunt, is a student working on her PHD. Together they try to find time for a relationship in between his challenging, globe-trotting job. He is unexpectedly called away on Christmas night, and at the airport, just before boarding his Fed-Ex flight to Asia, he surprisingly presents her with an engagement ring, saying "I'll be right back. . ." His plane goes down over the South Pacific. He is the only survivor and somehow manages to get to a raft and winds up on a deserted island for years. Suddenly, he has an idea of how to escape the reefs surrounding the island on a homemade bamboo raft. After drifting aimlessly for many days, he is spotted and rescued by the crew of a container ship who just happens to spot whats left of his raft. Now, one month later, he is returning to Memphis, to the Fed-Ex home base of operations. This is amazing. Nobody even thought that he was still alive, much more that he would ever be seen again. But here he is, home again. Unfortunately, after years of hanging-on, Kelley has moved on and is now married and has a child. Brokenhearted, she can't face him. After years of isolation, struggling to keep his sanity, everything seemingly is lost. After a corporate "Welcome Home" party, that night Chuck takes a taxi to Kelley's home. He has to see her. . . They are still madly in love with each other, but must face facts. Time has passed, other people's feelings must be respected, and reality must be faced. This was an enjoyable movie, although a bit predictable. Still, good entertainment and skillfully acted by all.Read full review
I have to write a review for this to counter some of the negative views I see other people have posted. I can see why this wouldn't be a movie that everyone would like because it does have slow parts, but I think it is an excellent movie if you give it a chance. This movie is about a person whose plane crashes into the ocean and has to live on an island by himself for several years. This is really about the psychology of a person and how he solves basic survival problems and learns how to live on his own after growing up in modern society where these things are taken for granted. On a different note, my favorite character in the movie is Wilson, a volleyball he draws a face on and talks to keep from being lonely. I recommend this movie and think it’s worth seeing at least once so you can decide your own opinion on it because it’s the kind of movie that some people will hate and others will love.Read full review
I adore Ton Hanks - but even a big name COULD NOT save this movie for me. All the hype and raves couldn't throw out a life preserver on this one... BORING!!! I'll never get back the time I wasted watching this movie. I respect Tom Hanks for having to carry this entire movie since most of it is him and some volleyball, but I was not hooked, or allowed to let go and get involved with just one character. the movie DID have really good scenes - the plane crash itself reinforced my fear of flying thast for sure, and the end (not wanting to spoil this movie - boring or not)was heart pulling and you definatly felt for him. Still it wasn't enough for me to have felt like I was entertained or brought away a feeling of something special. I can't even imagine a situation where I would even try to watch this movie again... including being castaway on an island and somehow had a way to watch ONLY this movie... I'd use it to cut coconuts or something.Read full review
I bought this movie when it came out on DVD for $22 and thought it was a steal. It was going for $28 when it came out. I've seen it on DVD over 40 times so far and twice at the theatre. Cast Away holds a very dear place in my heart because personally I was going through the same things metaphorically as was Tom Hanks character. I can throw in this DVD any time to watch it again and again. There's so much "deep" stuff going on throughout that if you watch closely, you'll notice something new now and then. It's not a movie for everyone. It does have it's "slow" parts, but that's part of the intentional effect, showing the four-plus years of elapsed time. The movie is an adventure, a love story, a tragedy, spiritual and so much more. If you haven't seen it yet, sit down, relax, take a deep breath and stay with it for the two-and-a-half hour story.Read full review
In Cast Away Tom Hanks plays an incredible role, for more than an hour he's the only person you see stranded on an island all by himself. It's a great story about survival as only an actor as great as Tom Hanks could pull off. However, when he hits the big wave and at last makes it off the island, you should just turn it off and call that the ending....
