I bought this just for fun. I was, however, quite impressed with it. For the price and size i really didn't expect much performance, but i was wrong. I hooked this little bad boy up to my PS3, and was pleasantly surprised with the size and image quality. I use it most to watch YouTube or movies while working on my laptop. It also works great with my iPod and came bundled with the iPod wire. The only problem i have with this projector is that the focus is very limited (even tho you can get a very good image), and its very sensitive. The slightest brush on the focus wheel will blur the image. I do have to warn people if you do buy this for your laptop you may need an adapter, unless your computer supports TV output. Other than that I would definitely recommend this little projector.
The small size and LED light caught my eye as a pretty good idea. In actual use, the room needs to be fairly dark or keep the viewing size small. I am pleased with the portability and the ease of connecting to audio, video signals to present to small groups. My hope to use it with a laptop was dashed when I could not use an adaptor for the laptop, as I had hoped. Use with a portable DVD or VHS certainly work great for presentations to a small group in a darkened room.
From an unbiased standpoint, this is a truly innovative product. It offers a solution for on-the-go presentations, and defines a new category of personal entertainment. The Optoma PK-101 PICO projector is extremely portable; it is roughly the size of a consumer standard cellular phone, while weighing lest than one. Finished in an aesthetically pleasing gloss piano black, this projector is surprisingly versatile in its applications. It is compatible with any device that utilizes RCA (red-white-yellow) AV cables, and even has an open market for mobile device compatibility. Also, with the purchase of a few other peripherals, a full surround sound system can even be used. However, that is where the superiority of the PK-101 diminishes. The performance of this product is exactly what one would expect to see. In a well lit room (typical office presentation room), the size and clarity of the picture is very limited because of the ambient light. The maximum span of the projected area that was still comfortably viewable was a modest 24~ inches, which is far from large enough to use in an influential presentation. The PK-101 does redeem itself in two aspects, though. In a dimly lit room (mid-day, lights off, slat-type blinds closed), the PK-101 is able to project up to a sizable 36~ inch image, whereas in a pitch black space, it is able to project an impressive 51~ inch viewing image, which would be ideal for a personal cinema, or any other application that involves a pitch black room (food for thought : purchase some audio adapters that will allow you to attach dedicated speaker systems. the built in speaker is a tiny .5 watts. Also, focusing the image might be a bit of a hassle, seeing as the focus wheel is slightly loose) The battery life of this item is also hardly surprising. It lasts about 1.25 minutes on the high brightness setting (~14.2 lumens) and about 1.49 minutes on the lower brightness setting (~10.7 lumens). Either of these figures is pushing its presentation applications, but that can be remedied by using the power adapter/usb cable provided, and also might be the reason two battery-cells are included (also, please take note that this projector runs VERY hot during usage). It is a very portable projector, but it lacks the punch of slightly larger projectors. Overall, the purchase and operation of the Optoma PK-101 PICO Projector has been a satisfying experience. Pros: Portable Versatile Device Compatibility Cons: Battery life Ambient light interference Personal application of product: I thought it would be interesting to make a personal cinema in my room. So far so good. I've got a 2.1 speaker system hooked into my MP3 player, which is hooked up to the projector via the included adapter. The MP3 player acts as the media control. I have already watched several movies. The ideal viewing size is about 40 inches, about 2.1 meters (or less) between projector and wall. This truly is a unique gadget. I did however find that a comfortable viewing size was around 40", and not the 60" that it recommends. At that size and below it really has a good overall picture quality. So if your not looking for a huge screen, and more of a portable projector, this is a perfect buy.
I used to install the big CRT and DLP projectors, some were hit and miss and still cost thousands... This hit it out of the ball park and I was truly expecting a bunt at best. Now don't expect to watch anywhere other than a nice dark spot with external speakers, or headphones, if you want to enjoy it. And it is not HD, but If I compare it the picture on most TVs that are not HD, it can rival most SD TV pictures I have ever seen. I can even blow it up to 100" and it is still a decent picture.. For $80?! I will possibly buy a couple more as gifts, because I know this will get me HUGE kudos with the in-laws when I show them the family videos with it and then give it to them to keep ;-)
