OPEK HR-12 comparison review
I already own 3 OPEK HR-12 antennas, all bought from separate sources at different times. I purchased this fourth HR-12 for a friend's radio as they are my favorite antenna. I need to remark, though, that the construction of this antenna, while remarkably similar, has notable differences in construction. This HR-12 is longer by one-quarter of an inch (1/4"), the end cap is smaller in diameter but still ribbed like all other HR-12's (some knock-offs have a smooth end cap), and the BNC base of the antenna is a dull plastic, instead of shiny, that tries to come very close to my other HR-12's but not quite the same mold. The antenna whip itself is also a different stock, dull instead of shiny, and a bit more flexible/wobbly than my existing HR-12's. The packaging it came in is spot on. ... So I either have to conclude that OPEK started to source their antennas from a different manufacturer, or it's quite possible that this is a knock-off of the brand. Side-by-side audio tests are inconclusive, which means this antenna probably has very similar properties to my other OPEK antennas. I have knock-off antennas that are horrible. This one is comparable -- good. I'm going to probably source future antennas locally, because I prefer the glossy finish and slightly firmer whip. Slightly disappointed I didn't get an exactly identical antenna. I encourage the seller to contact me if he wishes to explain what the deal is.
