While I can see how many would find Cornel West's views extreme, I feel that he has valid points about the direction of the country that seem clear and easy to see when provided examples. He is not disrespectful or hate filled.. he is simply stating one point of view that seems to be unheard in this day. One thing that was important was that he helped me to understand that being patriotic did not mean I had to believe in the current state of the government or all of the flag waving and bomb dropping, but that I could question it in a very Socratic way and ask how it can be a better government – not just for me but for the world. He also addresses the issues of American identity in other cultures, xenophobic behaviors, the religious right, but most of all he brings into the book excerpts of other writers views of democracy. From Emerson to Morrison.. he seems to show us that being liberal and loving Christ are not polar opposites.. he shows us that we cannot be safe hiding behind arrogance and bombs, and he shows us that all empires fall if they don’t keep their need for world domination under check. This book is not pro democrat or pro republican. It is one mans view of the state of our democracy – and in my opinion a very good one.Read full review
