This hardcover book is a true treasure! Not only is it a fine composite of how a family turns a tragedy into a new way to live, but shows the strength and resilience of the American people. The Kittredge family learns how to make valuable changes in their home and the way they earn a living. Kit learns how to make-over clothes, plant food that can be canned for the winter, run errands to earn extra money for the family, and "publish" a newsletter filled with happenings and pictures of her neighborhood. This terrific book has "lift-up" panels, dialable wheels, pop-ups, and detachable toys to play with! The historical information contained in the book is beautifully shown in stories of famous people, entertainment venues, and news coverage of President Franklin Roosevelt, and how he connected with the American People during one of the worst decades in our history. Yet this book does all this in a gently readable format. Kudos to American Girl, and their ability to find such wonderful authors and producers. Nancy PoquadeckRead full review
This book is fun and interactive. My daughter struggles sometimes with reading but loved this birthday present and has looked through the book carefully at least twice. I had to look at it myself too. It appears to be historically accurate and uses photos from the Depression. It also has an interactive treehouse with paper dolls, a checkers game, scavenger hunt, etc. It is a great learning experience to interact with this book and it doesn't contradict anything in the Kit movie. Highly recommend it if you like the historical American Girl doll characters.
This is a very cute book with a lot of activities to do on each page. I bought it for a 5 year old, but even the adults picked it up and went through it. It is the usual American Girl quality, so the materials are sturdy. It gives a good introduction to life in the 1930's for children 5 to 10.
If you loved the Kit Kittredge movie as much as we did, you will have to have this book. Not only does it have a map of Kit's world and interesting facts that you didn't learn in the movie, as well as other lift-the-flap fun, there is a pop-up of Kit's treehouse in the back complete with paperdolls that can play inside! This is a wonderful addition to our American Girl library and though it was purchased for a 6-year-old, our whole family enjoys it very much.
I like the american girls books and looking at what the girls lifes were back in there time.I hope my daughters will like them as much as me.I have not gotten the book yet I'm sure i will like it very much.If most girls would read the books i think thay would like them and be glad that thay live in this time and day.I like to read the books to my daughters every night and look at the pictures at the back of the books at what kind of close the girls wear and the food thay have to eat.
