I am a loyal fan of Tony Hillerman and I was leery about his daughter trying to follow through with the story line I have grown to love; however, I am now anxiously waiting for Miss Hillerman's third book about Leaphorn and Chee to become available. She does her father proud! I, once again, am home on the Reservation and enjoying the company of my Navajo friends and so enjoying her beautiful descriptions of the landscape I so very much love and miss. Anyone who has ever visited the Southwest or read any of Tony Hillerman's books will be thrilled to pick up on the story line once again. If you have never visited the area she writes about, you will not believe there is such a place as wonderful as she describes but let me assure you it is just as she says. My hope is she will continue to write many more stories so that I can continue to visit my favorite place on earth each time I read her books. Thank you, Miss Hillerman, for giving me back my visits with Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Sergeant Jim Chee,, Officer Bernadette Manuelito, and all the rest of the interesting people I have met through the years. I am eagerly waiting for my next visit-please keep them coming.Read full review

This has got to be the most BORING mystery I've read in many a year. Sadly, just because her dad was a great writer doesn't mean she is. Her plot PLODS.

When Tony Hillerman passed from this life I expected that my longtime friends in the Navajo Police were gone, too. However Anne Hillerman has picked up the stories of the crime on the res. Anne is a gifted writer and her mysteries would be award winning. But she picks up on the same characters that her father invited us to follow in his stories. However, she does not follow exactly in her father's footsteps. She goes off on her own journey with Chee, Leaphorn and Manuelito. She makes Manuelito the central figure and the other characters relate to her. The same towns, mountains, deserts and lands of the Navajo are visited, but Bernie Manuelito is the focus and it offers the readers an interesting view of police work from her point of view. Her story and her struggles give the series a new perspective. This was a fun and mystery filled read. I hope there are more Manuelito, Chee and Leaphorn stories that will unfold as told by Anne.Read full review

She builds the mystery and reveals it slowly near the end; just like a good mystery should. This book is a swell quick read.

I read nearly all of Tony Hillermans books and thank the lucky stars that his daughter continued in his realm. These books are great mysteries in a wonderful land with a wonderful Navajo Nation. I lived in this area in Farmington, N.M. for 15 years and loved it, the native people and the never ending beauty. It is spot on and includes some history so very informative. Thank you Ann Hillerman.
