I like the "people's" perspective that Zinn takes while exploring major themes and eras in American history. I hesitate to give it five stars because it tends to favor perspectives that make America look bad and only defends in passing. Although to be fair, America had many parts of her history that were ugly. I just wish there was more concerted effort of putting things in context for the time. Our politically correct society may not be equipped historically to handle to content without lurching into an "America is Evil" mantra.

There is NO such thing as History.... there are however Historical ACCOUNTS. Histories have been written, morphed, demonized and glorified as a product of human, and only human assessment. [Even though your dog knows EXACTLY when to wake you in the morning to go outside- and/or be fed... he has no wristwatch (actually a paw-watch) or sense of chronological time]. Only humans can assign importance to various and varied events and place this information in timely order of importance. However- which events are History Worthy? H G Wells' History of the World starts with Creation (read this captivating Historical account to find Well's definition of "Creation.)" and leads us through the centuries of WAR accounts (as do many histories) to "present day." Talk show hosts, politicians, and other ...

  • A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn

I like the literary style ;very 'readable' yet very concise. I like the subject matter and I like the intention the author has for his readers which ultimately supports justice ,not right/wrong based on opinion and social dogma, but justice based on our intuitve and integral sense of human-ness: compassion.I love Howard Zinn -is he married?
