About this product

Product Information

Learn more about the "Father of the Franchise Industry" in this illuminating history about the Howard Johnson restaurant franchise and the man behind it all. Howard Johnson created an orange-roofed empire of ice cream stands and restaurants that stretched from Maine to Florida, and all the way to the West Coast. With a reputation for good food at affordable prices, hungry customers would regularly return for more. The attractive white Colonial Revival restaurants, with eye-catching porcelain tile roofs, illuminated cupolas and sea blue shutters, were described in "Reader's Digest" in 1949 as the epitome of "eating places that look like New England town meeting houses dressed up for Sunday." Highlighted in television shows such as Mad Men and films Netflix's 2019 The Irishman , it's obvious that Howard Johnson's occupies an indelible and pleasant place popular culture. Boston historian and author Anthony M. Sammarco recounts how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, the "Tendersweet" clam strips, grilled frankforts and a menu of delicious and traditional foods that families eagerly enjoyed when they traveled.

  • A great place for travelers to stop at when they are traveling on the highways.

It is a great book about this great motel/hotel chain that I have enjoyed staying at when I have gone on trips over the years. It is a fabulous book telling about the chain and how it all started up in Massachusetts way back when. It is worth reading and it is enjoyable book to buy. There is plenty to read about this great hotel chain and how it all started up to became a very successful business.

  • A Tasty Review of American Roadside Dining

Howard Johnson's restaurants were a beloved American tradition. Travelers wanting a good meal were assured of a good meal, with a wide selection of favorites. This book details the history of the restaurant chain, starting with the founding of the business by Howard Johnson, and goes through the details of how the business was shrewdly expanded over the years until it reached from coast to coast and included motels as well as restaurants. Readers will learn how the menus were developed and how the famous ice cream flavors were created. Sample recipes are included, and there are plenty of wonderful color and black and white photos showing the restaurant decor, menus, and people involved in the growth of the company, starting with Howard Johnson himself and his family.
