About this product

Product Information

ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE 'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME * From "a master of the detective novel [and] one hell of a writer" ( The Boston Globe) comes a coolly glittering gem of detective fiction that has haunted three generations of readers. A treasure worth killing for. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man name Gutman, and Brigid O'Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett's iconic, influential, and beloved The Maltese Falcon.

"Dashiell Hammett . . . is a master of the detective novel, yes, but also one hell of a writer." The Boston Globe "The Maltese Falconis not only probably the best detective story we have ever read, it is an exceedingly well written novel." The Times Literary Supplement(London) "Hammett's prose [is] clean and entirely unique. His characters [are] as sharply and economically defined as any in American fiction." You get what you ordered in perfect condition.

It's what I ordered and wanted, a good copy of the book. I wanted to see what the book was like, what it was about, how it compared to the movie. I'm not going to try to be a critic, telling you whether it's a good book. That's a matter of opinion and taste. Read reviews. It's different and interesting, what this author focuses on in his descriptions.

  • The story is about a bird. It is interesting to watch it unfold

It is a rare occurrence when the movie so closely follows the book. I enjoyed the read and could visualize the film unfolding as I read.

  • the maltese falcon

Suprisingly enough being a pulp fan this is the first time that I had actually read the story. It is an engaging story but nothing singular about it. Sam Spade is not as sympathetic a charactor in the story as Bogart made him out to be in the movie. I think this is one of those rare instaces that the movie was much beteer that the book. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Angels and Demons" and yes I now that the Bogart movie was the third adaptation of the story. Any way Hammett's style holds up well and it is a shame that he did not write more Spade stories.
