Another Fine Mess
If you liked the first book in the series, "The Colour of Magic," you'll love this second installment in the Wizard Storyline in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (see my guide to Terry Pratchett's Discworld for more details about the various storylines). Rincewind and Two Flower are back, this time enlisting the help of the greatest hero of all time, Cohen the Barbarian (despite his advanced age, bad back, and lack of teeth), to save Discworld from the greatest horror of all - the turtle who carries the world on his shell has decided to head straight for a giant red star, which threatens to incinerate the entire planet. Rincewind, a wizard armed with a single spell that has managed to chase all other magic out of his head, Two Flower, and the sapient pearwood luggage have to navigate ... If you liked the first book in the series, "The Colour of Magic," you'll love this second installment in the Wizard Storyline in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (see my guide to Terry Pratchett's Discworld for more details about the various storylines). Rincewind and Two Flower are back, this time enlisting the help of the greatest hero of all time, Cohen the Barbarian (despite his advanced age, bad back, and lack of teeth), to save Discworld from the greatest horror of all - the turtle who carries the world on his shell has decided to head straight for a giant red star, which threatens to incinerate the entire planet. Rincewind, a wizard armed with a single spell that has managed to chase all other magic out of his head, Two Flower, and the sapient pearwood luggage have to navigate friendly trees, unfriendly trolls, computer-savvy druids, armageddon cultists, and spunky virgins disappointed in being saved from sacrifice, as well as the head of the school of magic, in order to complete their quest. As usual, Rincewind is the unwilling protagonist at the story's heart, but this time he is determined to get that dratted spell out of his head once and for all. In a climax of absurd proportions something happens (no spoilers!) that will change the future of discworld and the universe at large. For the better, maybe. For the funnier, of course! Pratchett's characteristic creative wordplay, and his ability to balance humor, pace, and action, are what keeps people coming back for more Discworld madness. This is one book you will not want to put down!

In this sort-of sequel to The Color of Magic, the reader is suddenly plunged into Sir Terry Pratchett's Mutiverse, as opposed to our simple Universe. Thus the reader runs headlong into apologetic trees, regenerating gingerbread houses, a whimsical and wryly hysterically funny Death, as well as the dangers of falling off of the Disc and what THAT entails. The Disc is the what comprises This World: and one CAN fall off its rim, right onto one of the four elephants which uphold it, or, worse, onto the galaxy-sized turtle lumbering beneath the elephants (don't ask!). Mr. Pratchett presents a Multi-verse which is just as probable as our Universe, but which does have its differences. The wizards are kind of a disgustingly sloppy bunch, and some are totally dense...resembling some of our own ... Death, as a character, is terse without being rude, and often screamingly FUNNY, if at times a bit droll. Here it is very possible to fall in love with a set of Luggage, laugh in the face of Death, grow to deeply admire the grumpiest of Trolls, and marvel at Cohen the Barbarian (an 87 year old Hero who needs a good set of dentures so as to better impress his 17 year-old virgin bride). It would also be wise for the reader NOT to forget to bring along a few bananas for the Unseen University librarian! It couldn't hurt. Magic spins the Disc, guides The Turtle towards its very own star, and turns the characters upside-down and forwards. Laugh out LOUD funny and sanely mad, this is a read to remember. No wonder Terry Pratchett was knighted for his work in 2009! After all, everyone knows that there are no longer any Wizards left in England...or ARE there??? In any event, few, if any, can equal the imaginative and consistently fabulous works of this One True Knight of the Octagonal Table...

Welcome to the World of Terry Pratchett.
Book two of the adventures of Twoflower and Rincewind as they tour the Discworld. A great ending for the first book 'The Color of Magic. Love these books and all of the Discworld books as well. Great reads with fun and adventure for the whole family.
