About this product

Product Information

The seminal book about IQ and class that ignited one of the most explosive controversies in decades, now updated with a new Afterword by Charles Murray Breaking new ground and old taboos, Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray tell the story of a society in transformation. At the top, a cognitive elite is forming in which the passkey to the best schools and the best jobs is no longer social background but high intelligence. At the bottom, the common denominator of the underclass is increasingly low intelligence rather than racial or social disadvantage. The Bell Curve describes the state of scientific knowledge about questions that have been on people's minds for years but have been considered too sensitive to talk about openly -- among them, IQ's relationship to crime, unemployment, welfare, child neglect, poverty, and illegitimacy; ethnic differences in intelligence; trends in fertility among women of different levels of intelligence; and what policy can do -- and cannot do -- to compensate for differences in intelligence. Brilliantly argued and meticulously documented, The Bell Curve is the essential first step in coming to grips with the nation's social problems.

    Intelligence

A well-researched and written book suitable for the casual reader and the specialist. Though its observations were supported by copious surveys and studies spanning many decades, the authors were excoriated by left wing ultra-liberals and apologists who refused to acknowledge irrefutable facts. Regardless, it is an excellent study of "intelligence" in the USA and a recommended read.

  • Top critical review

    Interesting, but full of bias.

A rather famous book with a disappointing and rather racist thesis. One is left to wonder if the authors had a hidden agenda. Twenty-five years after its original publication, the book is still creating controversy.

  • Changed the way I think

This is one of the most thought provoking and impressive books I have ever read. Even if you disagree with the authors' statements about race, the main thrust of the book, that a segregated cognitive elite is emerging is compelling and troublesome.

  • Intellectual yes, but with numerous pit falls

There are some works of non-fiction that infinitely stimulate the mind, while others should be emulsified with the likes of a baseball bat, conflagrated via bon-fire, flushed down a toilet, etc. (choose your own method if you will). The Bell Curve represents a deeply thought out work of writing. However, it also neglects all possible variables for intelligence, intellectual standing, and occupational success except for genetics and social class. Most notably human motivation, focus, and grade school education are completely written off as "unusuable" material without any rational explanation as to why. Relying heavily on identical twin studies and correlations, Mr. Murray and Mr. Hernstein are excessively occupied with drawing conclusions that simply cannot be drawn from ...

  • An excellent book on a controversial topic

This is a thoroughly rigorous exposition into human intelligence. It summarises all the relevant statistical studies into intelligence and how it correlates with other measurable factors. It taught me a lot. You may have heard a lot of bad things about this book. Well, it turns out that the smear stories are all politically motivated. I recommend you read it and make up your own mind! I still bristle when I think of the attempts by apparently intelligent people to suppress this book. Don't let them.
