About this product

Product Information

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER The extraordinary memoir of a peasant boy raised in rural Maoist China who was plucked from his village to study ballet and went on to become one of the greatest dancers of his generation. From a desperately poor village in northeast China, at age eleven, Li Cunxin was chosen by Madame Mao's cultural delegates to be taken from his rural home and brought to Beijing, where he would study ballet. In 1979, the young dancer arrived in Texas as part of a cultural exchange, only to fall in love with America-and with an American woman. Two years later, through a series of events worthy of the most exciting cloak-and-dagger fiction, he defected to the United States, where he quickly became known as one of the greatest ballet dancers in the world. This is his story, told in his own inimitable voice. THE BASIS FOR A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

"[A] fascinating memoir...told simply but passionately, with subtle humor and unguarded emotion."-- The Houston Chronicle "Mix  Billy Elliot  with  Torn Curtain  and you'll have some of the tale in very broad outline...well-paced...full of adventures."-- Kirkus Reviews   "Fascinating reading...unfolds with honesty, humor, and a quiet dignity. This book has wide appeal, for it concerns not only a dancer's coming of age in a turbulent time but also individual strength, self-discovery, and the triumph of the human spirit."-- Library Journal "The facts of his life are astonishing on their own, but what makes Li Cunxin's engrossing autobiography so captivating is his enthusiastic retelling of every twist and turn."-- Vogue  (Australia), "[A] fascinating memoir...told simply but passionately, with subtle humor and unguarded emotion."-- The Houston Chronicle "Mix Billy Elliot with Torn Curtain and you'll have some of the tale in very broad outline...well-paced...full of adventures."-- Kirkus Reviews "Fascinating reading...unfolds with honesty, humor, and a quiet dignity. • Mao's Last Dancer is EXCELLENT

The book is beautifully written. There is no co-writer in evidence, which would tend to mean that this man, who grew up as a Chinese peasant, managed to gain a superb literary command of English. If any substantial editing work was involved, it's done so discreetly that the very thought makes tears come to my eyes. The book is nearly 450 pages long, I began reading at 11 PM and was still spellbound 4.5 hours later when I finished reading it. I am extraordinarily happy that a certain blogger whom I read regularly recommended it, and very glad that I took her good advice to get hold of it. The book immerses you in the world of Communist China, it is very obviously authentic, written by someone who lived the realities described. Nothing is exaggerated, nothing is played down. It's all ...

  • Chinese boy born in poverty becomes a successful dancer in America.

I loved this book. Having done a fair bit of dancing in my life, I could really relate to the difficulty of the training he went through & how different it is in this country. The scenes of his life in his village in China were so interesting. I do not think many Americans have any concept of real poverty like he experienced or how incredible it can be to beat the odds like he did and become a success. I had seen the movie first and just had to read the book. (The movie was really good, very true to the book, and the dancing is terrific.) I liked this book so much that I bought it for two friends, one who was a professional ballet dancer, the other who is a balletomaine.

  • Good, easy read.

I liked the 5x7ish size of book for easy holding and reading. Used book in good condition. Content gave good vision of China's conditions during Mao's reign and transition and contrasting with America, and the life of Cunxin making his "transition."

  • Excellent book

You will realize how good your life is, and how many comforts you take for granted, when you read this book about a poor peasant boy in China who manages to come to America to dance ballet.

  • Mao's Last Dancer

I loved reading Mao's Last Dancer. This book was chosen for my May Book Club reading. Living in Friendswood, TX, I have been to numerous Houston Ballet performances over many years and have had the pleasure of seeing the performances of Li Cunxin. He is amazing!
