About this product

Product Information

In his own book, Wartime , Paul Fussell called With the Old Breed "one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war." John Keegan referred to it in The Second World War as "one of the most arresting documents in war literature." And Studs Terkel was so fascinated with the story he interviewed its author for his book, "The Good War." What has made E.B. Sledge's memoir of his experience fighting in the South Pacific during World War II so devastatingly powerful is its sheer honest simplicity and compassion. Now including a new introduction by Paul Fussell, With the Old Breed presents a stirring, personal account of the vitality and bravery of the Marines in the battles at Peleliu and Okinawa. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1923 and raised on riding, hunting, fishing, and a respect for history and legendary heroes such as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene Bondurant Sledge (later called "Sledgehammer" by his Marine Corps buddies) joined the Marines the year after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and from 1943 to 1946 endured the events recorded in this book. In those years, he passed, often painfully, from innocence to experience. Sledge enlisted out of patriotism, idealism, and youthful courage, but once he landed on the beach at Peleliu, it was purely a struggle for survival. Based on the notes he kept on slips of paper tucked secretly away in his New Testament, he simply and directly recalls those long months, mincing no words and sparing no pain. The reality of battle meant unbearable heat, deafening gunfire, unimaginable brutality and cruelty, the stench of death, and, above all, constant fear. Sledge still has nightmares about "the bloody, muddy month of May on Okinawa." But, as he also tellingly reveals, the bonds of friendship formed then will never be severed. Sledge's honesty and compassion for the other marines, even complete strangers, sets him apart as a memoirist of war. Read as sobering history or as high adventure, With the Old Breed is a moving chronicle of action and courage.

Reviews
"The best personal account of World War II. Sledge never loses sight of the honor and the glory of war. Excellent in all respects."--Kevin S. Fontenot, Tulane University, "Among the thousands of soldiers' stories, I am haunted by one from thePacific War....[Sledge's account is] one of the most arresting documents in warliterature."--John Keegan, in The Second World War, "One of the most important personal accounts of war that I have ever read.I believe that it will become a classic, and will be read and cited as long asthe Pacific campaign is remembered."--John Keegan, "I feel like I should have a campaign ribbon for Pelelin and Okinawa. Ihave shared the fox hole. I have felt the heat. It is the closest thing tobeing there. After reading the book my buddies in K-3-5 are real. It has to beamong the best works of its kind. The forgotten soldiers tell one story. TheseMarines are remembered,"--William J. Ikeriran, Univ. of North Alabama, "Although rendering his war experiences is "painful," the effort to bringthem to the "folks back home" is ultimately worthwhile if not necessary....Inevery word appear Sledge's urgency of purpose, the immediacy of his experienceof war, and the mark of that on his character. I am not alone in claiming thismemoir to be the most comprehensive--and scathing, compelling,sorrow-laden--rendering of the marine infantryman's experience in World WarII."--Sewanee Review, "Classic....Should be required reading for all students, especially nowthat we are once again unleashing the dogs of war."--John F. Cox, University ofArizona, "In what may be his finest feat as a critic, Fussell introduces the readerto a hitherto unsung but remarkable author named Eugene B. Sledge....This bookrichly merits a wider audience....The searing honesty of [Sledge's] words makesthem...a fitting epitaph for the ordeal that began in Danzig fifty yearsago."--Newsweek

    A Grunt's Eye

No doubt about it. This is the best book ever written about the landings and the war at a Grunt's Eye View from the Pacific War. People don't realize it, but we fought two wars during WWII. The Pacific War was the most savage war in the history of modern warfare. This account from Sledgehammer is worth reading at least once.

  • War, Peace, or Slavery? Why the Bomb was used. McNaull

With the Old Breed – At Peleliu and Okinawa by E. B. Sledge is a very important book at many different levels. It is like the Bible, there are lessons and messages throughout that speak to the past, the present, and to the future. It can be used to explain or support almost any argument that deals with human conflict and why men fight, have fought, and will probably continue to fight. First, it is amazing that the book ever written. Most combat veterans from the major wars in the 20th Century, especially at the level of those on the front line, have refrained from telling about what combat was really like to those who did not share the experience. Civil War veterans were more likely to write and share their experiences than those of WWI and WWII. Historians and the public are most used ...

  • More history of this nature is essential in our schools to a free people and to maintain the survival of the Republic.

Only a combat veteran who spent weeks and months on the front line in the muck and misery could tell this story. I learned of E. B. Sledge through other readings but AN Understanding of the fight against Japan is incomplete without this man's recounting. It is a wonder he manged to hold on to his notes and that the story was not lost. I was a teacher and know... KNOW... that this information is not being passed on to our young folks. To those I taught through 2014 the story of WWII is as distant as the Peloponnesian Wars. It's a shame history is taught by those who only know what's in the standard course of study and through so little of the oral history that's been preserved.

  • Why We All Owe Them

This is a stirring account of the surreal violence of war and how good citizens who loved their families were put into circumstances in which they not only could be killed in gruesome ways, but would also be forced to kill others as part of the Allied effort in the Pacific in WWII. Not for the faint of heart, but highly advised for those who need to raise their regard for diplomacy and peace.

  • Approaching the end of an era

Read the narrative "The Pacific" about the TV series and wanted to follow up with this first hand account mentioned in the text. Had close relatives who served in this combat theater and find comparative stories about this history interesting. We soon will be without our WWII vets; let us remember them well.
