About this product

Product Information

A gripping portrait of the first president of the United States from the author of Alexander Hamilton , the New York Times bestselling biography that inspired the musical. Celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation and the first president of the United States. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one volume biography of George Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his adventurous early years, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president. In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow shatters forever the stereotype of George Washington as a stolid, unemotional figure and brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods. Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Biography "Truly magnificent... a] well-researched, well-written and absolutely definitive biography" -- Andrew Roberts, The Wall Street Journal "Superb... the best, most comprehensive, and most balanced single-volume biography of Washington ever written." -- Gordon S. Wood, The New York Review of Books "A truly gripping biography of George Washington... I can't recommend it highly enough--as history, as epic, and, not least, as entertainment. It's as luxuriantly pleasurable as one of those great big sprawling, sweeping Victorian novels." -- Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker Lin-Manuel Miranda's smash Broadway musical Hamilton has sparked new interest in the Revolutionary War and the Founding Fathers. In addition to Alexander Hamilton, the production also features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr, Lafayette, and many more. Ron Chernow's latest biography, Grant , is now available in paperback.

"A vastly enlightening, overwhelmingly engaging treatment of a great man ...another book on Washington? is a question rendered pointless by this one, which happens to be the author's masterpiece. Definitive Washington is the point and effect of this biography." -Booklist, "Tenaciously researched...This new portrait offers a fresh sense of what a groundbreaking role Washington played, not only in physically embodying his new nation's leadership but also in interpreting how its newly articulated constitutional principles would be applied...deeply rewarding." -New York Times "Just as he resuscitated Alexander Hamilton in a heralded 2004 biography, Ron Chernow now resurrects Washington...[A] remarkable book." -Entertainment Weekly "Today, books about Washington continue to appear at such an astonishing rate that the publication of Ron Chernow's prompts the inevitable question: Why another one? An obvious answer is that Chernow is no ordinary writer. Like his popular biographies of John D. The best of/on Wahington.

I bought this for the historian in my family. She had already read this book and said it was the Best she had ever read on Washington. This is saying a great deal as she has read many, many books on all the presidents.... I had to get it for her when I saw it offered for $8.00 buck. I wish it had had the photo cover but I suppose that, in the end, is not important.Thank u for this excellent offer/deal.

  • Exciting , well writen!

Ron Chernow has writen a number of books on significant figures in American History. After reading Alexander Hamilton, I was curious to see how Chernow treated a Sainted figure such as George Washington. Well with excellent research, scholarship, chernow reveled a very human man. Washington was filled with doubts, ambition and buring desire to lead. Chernow makes Washington a man who we could recognize and respect. Even with his all too common human flaws, which Chernow explores fully and truthfuly, Washington comes across time as man who can be liked, respected and even in some cases disliked. If anything,Ron Chernow makes one of the greatest figures in US History human! What I liked about the book was that it was organized well, the relationships were explored and explained so the ...

  • Astounding Patriotism

If you only read one history book in your life, read this one. It is an impeccably researched, compellingly written story of our Republic's founding, and of the central, tireless figure, George Washington. I would give this book 10 stars if I could.
