    Vietnam

An entertaining author who knows how to write a novel. Puts you into the story. This book has a realistic feel about it but I guess you can get more out of it being there in '68 and then reliving the horrors of that war, it is not something that passes thru the mind very easily. I was there and can relate to all that was said in the novel. Our country was a different time and place to vets returning from a place they did not want to be and the people here did not respect their own as they do now. I think this is something that all should read.

  • Amazing book but read the character's books in order to understand the background

One of the best books I have ever read but you need to read The General's Daughter first to learn about the main character Paul Brenner. This book not only has an amazing story as the basis for the book but contains some of the most fascinating and horrific images of the Vietnam war. Definitely one of DeMille's best!

  • Revisited, Thanks DeMille

Up Country allowed me to re-visit RVN in the safety of my favorite easy chair but brought back a lot of the excitement of my first visit in 1968-69. I thought the story was excellent, Saigon, Hue, the Perfume River, the Citadel, all memories from my past. Some good, some not but re-lived and shared with my family, some for the first time. Who knows what a real odyssey like this would really be like! Mr. DeMille made it real and plausible for me. Thank you for refreshing good memories and helping to bury the bad ones. Best action book I have ever read!!!

  • Experience Vietnam

This was nothing at all like I expected. It was billed as a sequel to The General's Daughter. However, the setting in Vietnam takes over the book as does the experience of the hero who journeys from Saigon to Hanoi many years after the war is over. I think this is as close to Vietnam as I ever care to get, thank you very much. It was intense. I was in high school when the war ended. The shame of how we did that and what we did to our allies is pretty hard to bear, and the book is a reminder of that. For all the background on the war and on the country that Vietnam has become which is in itself fascinating, it is a good page turner/thriller as you try to figure out exactly who and what the heroine is and why they have been sent on this journey. I highly recommend it. My only criticism is ...

  • Another DeMille hit for a Movie

Me DeMille has done it again. With the personal history of Vietnam and the continuing dialogue with the two main characters. Made me anxious to follow this novel at a fast pace even with its over 900 pages. Keep them coming .
