Product Information

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - This is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America In this unforgettable chronicle of perhaps the most famous moment in American military history, James Bradley has captured the glory, the triumph, the heartbreak, and the legacy of the six men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. Here is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America. In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima--and into history. Through a hail of machine-gun and mortar fire that left the beaches strewn with comrades, they battled to the island's highest peak. And after climbing through a landscape of hell itself, they raised a flag. Now the son of one of the flagraisers has written a powerful account of six very different young men who came together in a moment that will live forever. To his family, John Bradley never spoke of the photograph or the war. But after his death at age seventy, his family discovered closed boxes of letters and photos. In Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley draws on those documents to retrace the lives of his father and the men of Easy Company. Following these men's paths to Iwo Jima, James Bradley has written a classic story of the heroic battle for the Pacific's most crucial island--an island riddled with Japanese tunnels and 22,000 fanatic defenders who would fight to the last man. But perhaps the most interesting part of the story is what happened after the victory. The men in the photo--three were killed during the battle--were proclaimed heroes and flown home, to become reluctant symbols. For two of them, the adulation was shattering. Only James Bradley's father truly survived, displaying no copy of the famous photograph in his home, telling his son only: "The real heroes of Iwo Jima were the guys who didn't come back. " Few books ever have captured the complexity and furor of war and its aftermath as well as Flags of Our Fathers . A penetrating, epic look at a generation at war, this is history told with keen insight, enormous honesty, and the passion of a son paying homage to his father. It is the story of the difference between truth and myth, the meaning of being a hero, and the essence of the human experience of war.

The swan, which was packaged very securely, arrived quickly. The item was as described with plenty of photographs by which to examine it. The seller responded quickly to a question I had about payment, as well as a concern about affixing "Fragile" stickers to the package. Also, the seller included a bill of lading with product description and cost, which most Ebay sellers don't provide.

    Controversy or Not!

A well written book. Very enjoyable reading with a great amount of research placed upon the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. By the time you finish reading the book, you feel like you personally know each of these men. The sacrifices these men and women gave for our freedom are overlooked by so many people today and only through books like this will their memories survive. Whether John Bradley was present in the flag raising or not, takes away little from the value of this book. This is a must read book for those wanting to learn more about our fighting soldiers.

  • Young americans must know what the Greast Generation sacirificed for their Freedom

I shed a lot of tears reading this history lesson, the bravery these very young men had for each others well fair is all most beyond believe. I believe that Mr Bunchanan on page 153, asked a fellow Marine name Scotty a question about any Japs being left to fight after the shelling from the Navy . Scotty might have been my ex-brother in law? I urge all Americans to read this soul searching epic truth of W.W.-2

  • Tribute to those on Iwo Jima - Wonderful Book

James Bradley's story of his Father John Bradley and the other men raising the flag on Iwo Jima is a sad, painful reminder to all Americans the sacrifices they and their families made during this time in our history. This was a generation of Americans who proudly marched into battle sacrificing life and limb for the freedoms we may at times take for granted. The story about flag-raiser Ira Hayes is one of particular poignancy for me. The graphic reality of war is ever-present and yet a loving tribute to these special Americans. I recommend reading the book prior to seeing the Clint Eastwood movie. The movie is a wonderful adaptation of the book and masterfully done.

  • Personal war story,Flag raising Marines, Iwo Jima WW11

Mt brother in-law was a decorated war hero from the 24th Infantry Division, that served in Iwo Jima and the Pacific during WW11. My son was very close to him, and reads everything he can about that war. I wanted to buy it for him. He was not in the least disappointed in this true story of war and heroism. He said it was really difficult to put down. For him it depicted the reality of the battles on an island that was full of tunnels, minefields, unbearable heat, miserable terrain, insects, and Japanese soldiers determined to fight, kill, or be killed in order to retain that island. The story of this war and its aftermath, was written by the son of Flag raising Marine John Bradley, and is a truly interesting book.

  • Flags of our Fathers

I have read his second book, Flyboys. This was one of the best written, insightful, and informative books I have ever read. Flyboys deals with the Pacific War near Iwo Jimo, on an island called Chichi Jimo. Mr Bradley does an excellent job of uncovering the details of the fates of downed airmen around this island. He presents a very balanced account of these times from both the American and Japanese viewpoints. I learned a lot about the Pacific War from reading this book. Flyboys prompted me to buy Flags of our Fathers.
