Northern China recollections by a U.S. marine in post-WW II China.
China Marine captures a short but critical period in northern China in the aftermath of WWII when Peiping (Beijing, now) was not yet overrun by the Chinese Communists. Sledge's description of many factions at work provides a different approach not eschewed by academics. His efforts to learn spoken Chinese and his several deep friendships there provide a sense of the changing society as well as the traditional society. U.S. Marines had a half-century of different levels of service in China. Without the ambitions of Great Britain, Russia or Japan, I believe their insights to be less colonial in nature and more open to the experience of China itself. Infantryman Sledge had served int two of the bloodiest, long-fought Pacific theater battles in WW II, Pelelieu and Olinawa, where his 5th ... If you like personal wars stories then this is it. Written by R.V. Burgin and his story of his fight in the Pacific, takes place on an Island that really no one has heard of. Why? R.V. Burgin gives his opinion on this and it makes since, but the battle was more costly than the bigger island wars and just as important, I enjoyed his story telling and made me feel like i knew him, He gives a brief but filling look at his personal life so you actually get to know him rather just thrown into a war with no idea who you are reading about, he covers the 4 differant Islands and landings with enough detail to make you feel you are there, he doesnt go over board or fill in the blanks with elaborate tales, it is precise and grippin. If you liked HBO's the Pacific, then you MUST read R.V. Burgin's story, you will reconize some of the other men in his book with the series. It will complete the story and you get first hand the feelings and what they really went through. This is a must read for any war buff, and especially Pacific Theater buffs. I cant say enough good things about this book so i will stop so you can go and read for yourself. Thank you R. V. Never, and I mean never have I read an account of war that was so personal. After reading the two books you will never, never look at a combat veteran again without touching your heart and saying 'thank you".
