An Avid Fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury I must have all things Queen and this is no exception. I have another copy of this CD and I must say that it is one of the best. I can honestly say I love all their music but the edgy early sound that made the solid foundation that is Queen makes this a must have. With ever lasting favorites and less known tracks this really is a must have. From the upbeat high energy of "Keep Your Self Alive " to the gentle yet powerful "Doing Alright" to the previously un-released "Mad The Swine" and who can forget the long lost version of "Keep Yourself Alive" this really is a great listen. I have played and re-played this CD and find new reasons to love this CD. "My Fairy King" is a gem that many may not be aware of and yet shows the gentle yet raw yet honest side of Freddie and to those in the know can picture the raw heartfelt emotion that Freddie must have been expressing as he sang that song. To listen to this CD and then progress with the later offerings one can musically follow the band to their trade mark sound and see the roots in the transition. In "The Night Comes Down" you can hear the tight knit harmonies of the band. Queen always released music with a meaning or a reflection of what they were going through in life at that time and this 1st release really is reflective of their style. If you love the tight harmonies, the Brian May guitar style or just good old fashioned rock and roll this will be a great listen. I respect a group who never sides politically with their music and to express themselves thru their craft. I can honestly there is not one track on this CD that is a dud. Nor can I say a single song released by Queen to fit that category. This CD is on the rare side and originally was not released on CD as were several on Hollywood Records, Given the chance to own this gem jump on it. Rare is a group that had so much talent both in writing, performance, showmanship or longevity as Queen demonstrated and this was just the start of a long road of successful releases.Read full review
I listened to this album relentlessly as a youth when it first came out. When I stumbled across it on eBay, I made a nostalgic purchase, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I absolutely love the early Queen albums. They have a certain raw, producer-free, and almost unpolished flavor to them in comparison to their later, highly polished albums. Not that the album isn't pro quality, it is, especially given the technology of the day. But they recorded the songs just like they played them at the clubs and in the practice garage. What an insight into what was to come! And, as Freddie is sadly no longer with us (God rest his soul), we only have what we have of his works. If you are familiar with Queen's later albums, and have not experienced Queen I or Queen II, I recommend you check it out! Besides, it's only a few bucks to hear the early works of a man, and a band, who truly were musical geniuses!Read full review
Queen's first album. There's some serously HARD rockin' going on here! 'Golden Country' is superbly written and after all these years still speaks the truth about our civil responsibility to hold on to our national dreams. Being a 70's guitarist, my personal favorite is 'Like You Do' because of the many riff and dymanics changes throughout the jam. There's even a track on there about locals discussing going into the village to meet the guy called "Jesus" that will NEVER get air time. A fittingly excellent start for a wonderful band!
This is a good cd, it rocks all the way through, besides freddies great voice youll hear brian may laying slabs of rock guitar..this is very different from queens later releases, wich were a bit more pop. when i was young all i knew of queen was bohemian rhapsody, then i met a colledge friend who was a big fan, and he played their cds alot..and i liked what i heard. so buying this queens first lp brought back memories of those days. now that im older..i can fully appreciate just how good queen is, and how cool this first lp is..
This limited re-release of the first lp by the band Queen has extras that the original simply did not. I first owned this title on vinyl when I was young, recently I've been buying all of the Queen studio material in cd form. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this cd, with its extra tracks so I bought it right away. Let me tell you, I am very, very pleased with this disk. The energy and the excellent riffs coming out of Brian May's guitar pack a wollup! This, to me, is the heaviest of all of the bands releases, and Freddie Mercury sounds so incredible as the frontman belting out the lyrics in a way only he could do. If you bought this cd, trust me, you won't regret it!
