Overall, this is a very solid album by Marillion - not as exceptional as their immortal "Misplaced Childhood," but still a great deal better than many other bands' "best" work. Pros: Great flow from song to song, with a skillfully-expressed melancholy feel pervading the album's sound both musically and lyrically. As a result, this running theme adds a nice sense of continuity to most every song. Fish's voice has never been in better form, and the instrumentation is always spot-on. Great work overall. Cons: The very last song on this album ("The Last Straw") is to me the weakest effort on the album, and ending such a great album on a stale note can ruin an overall effect when the album is listened to all the way through. Furthermore, while there are songs that approach other subjects, the vast majority of songs on here pertain to A) the events leading up to, B) the thought process involved in, and C) and the results of: drinking. While this is an album with a theme (which I view as a good thing), the repetition of this idea may come to be a bit wearisome after a while to some. With that in mind, that also leads to the fact that there really aren't many upbeat songs (with the exception of "Incommunicado", "Just For The Record", and "The Last Straw, sort of). So if you don't mind a theme that may be a bit of a downer (with a relative lack of upbeat songs), then do yourself a favor and GET THIS ALBUM. Tragic in scope, majestic in melodies, powerful in emotion - great great stuff.Read full review
