The album "Get Skintight" by Californian all-girl quartet The Donnas was their third album released in June of 1999. The band were only nineteen (roughly) when this album was written and this is evident in the lyrical content throughout the 14 tracks contained on the CD, never straying far from the sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll theme. With a clear 80's glam-metal/punk sound you could say that they're in the wrong era but I'd say that they're keeping that spirit alive. They're not being clever or particularly fancy - although, they're still pretty talented musicians which does become more evident in their three recent efforts - with their songs but they are a lot of fun and easy to relate to (especially for teenage or 20 something women, I would imagine). You can relate to them because they write about getting messed-up (booze or otherwise) and having fun which I'm sure is what we've all done (and probably continue to do!) A lot of the album is about getting together with other boys or least trying to amongst many other normal practices for girls of that age. Track number 13 on the album is a cover of MΓΆtley CrΓΌe's "Too Fast For Love" which obviously isn't as good as the original but is never-the-less still good to hear and a clear homage to a band that they clearly look up to and draw influence from. I would give the album "Get Skintight" a score of 3/5 mainly because of the production sound not really being that great but also the musical and vocal techniques were still being honed at this stage of the The Donnas' career but it is still, overall, a good album and worth listening to, especially for any fans of the 80's glam-metal sound. I would, however, suggest that you listen to the three most recent albums by The Donnas which are "Spend The Night" (2002), "Gold Medal" (2004) and their latest effort "Bitchin'" (2007). "Spend The Night" being my personal favourite of The Donnas' back-catalogue as it is similar to "Get Skintight" with the lyrical content but the production sound is much better and the vocal and playing techniques are well and truly honed and sounding fantastic with a hard and fast passion for living it up. To summarise, The Donnas' are a band worth making the effort to listen to and their album "Get Skintight" (although not their best) should still be heard as it shows clear intent to the direction in which these rock chicks headed and it's a journey that's thoroughly enjoyable to be on.Read full review
