When this record came out I considered it one of my least favorite DT albums....since then, though, it has grown on me, perhaps part of that being because it was Portnoy's final recording with the band. Songs like "A Nightmare to Remember," "Wither," and "Shattered Fortress" are all top notch, and "The Count of Tuscany" holds up fairly well against other DT long-play epics (somewhat cheesy lyrics notwithstanding). For me, this one now ranks in the "middle tier" of Dream Theater studio albums, with my "top tier" consisting of IAW, SFOM, SDOIT, and TOT.

I am a long-time Dream Theater fan, and while this isn't their best release, it certainly isn't their worst. Would definitely recommend having in anyone's CD collection, once they're already acquainted with some more legendary (in my opinion, anyway) albums by Dream Theater (I&W, Awake, DOT).

I absolutely love this album, very good musicianship and very careful attention to the CD release.
