After the first success of the debut album, Dio decided to play it safe with 1984 sophomore effort, The Last in Line -- with mixed results. Songs like "We Rock," "Breathless," and "I Speed at Night" go from good to grating surprisingly fast, and the seven-minute epic "Egypt (The Chains Are On)" inexplicably loses it's awesome main riff halfway through. The band score some points with the driving "Evil Eyes," the theatrical "One Night in the City," and the solid title track, but the intended hit single "Mystery" is simply horrible. I like voice of Ronnie James Dio, so I decided on eBay to buy one of my favourite albums Last in Line.
First off, REST IN PEACE Ronnie James Dio, died May 16th 2010 of stomach cancer...a giant metal legend has been lost! THE LAST IN LINE is Dio's sophomore solo release after his classic HOLY DIVER Cd and while it certainly is not as well crafted as the Holy Diver album, THE LAST IN LINE stands up on its own legs and far exceeds most sophomore efforts for sure. Stand out tracks include "I Speed At Night," "Mystery," "We Rock," "Egypt (The Chains Are Off)," "One Night In The City" and of course the title track. Lead guitarist on this one is the famous Vivian Campbell, who went on to join Def Leppard after Steve Clark's untimely demise. Quite simply if you are a DIO fan, then THE LAST IN LINE must be in your collection! I give it 5 out of 5 stars. And again, R.I.P. Ronnie, you WILL be missed. Peace-LLNRead full review
