What a way to kick off a career! This debut album holds up really well, even over 30 years after it's release. Though shortly after this album, (in the late 70's), Costello tended to get lumped in with most of the early punk, this one is more evocative of 50s/60s rock than that. Very basic, but with some of the smartest lyrics and musical hooks ever conceived. Okay, maybe that' IS a bit of hyperbole, but it is nearly that damn good! There are also versions of this re-release CD with as many as 22 tracks (the maximum I could find...), I am reviewing the limited 13-track version that I received here on eBay. Point is -- find the version that most appeals to you on this one, as there are a couple of releases out there for you to choose from. Some of my all-time favorite songs are on this one: when I first got into Elvis Costello (way back when...) I played the single of "Watching the Detectives" every day. Very cool song that always reminded me of Sam Spade crime noir, but that's just me. "Welcome to the Working Week" is one heck of an (if cliche) anthem for adult life. Or is it? Catchy choruses and guitar/bass/keyboard hooks totally hallmark Costello's brilliant writing in songs like "Waiting for the End of the World", "Pay It Back" and "Mystery Dance". What's amazing to me is that, as I've read, this album was recorded in a 24 hour period in a studio. Only because I've been there & done that, but not even in 24 hours! And we didn't produce anything as high quality and innovative as this, mind you... And to often see this among top 50 all time rock album lists (check it out, seriously) is cool. And there is a good reason for that acclaim. This album is recommended for anyone that likes good ol' rock and roll or Elvis Costello in general. I love it, and am glad to have it back after selling my vinyl years ago. Check it out, you arte not likely to be disappointed.Read full review

Elvis is still the king. I loved this album since I was 12. Haven't listened to the whole album in 20 years. Really glad I bought it. Soundtrack to my youth.
