When I say Hip-Hop, I mean intelligent artfully crafted lyrics with a real purpose or message. The album S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. by One Be Lo (AKA One Man Army)is truly an elevation in Hip-Hop, it is by far the best album I own out of over 600 full CD's. To Give you an idea of who this brilliant rapper is I will give you a very short history lesson. First, One Man Army and Decompoze were the dynamic duo of Binary Star, spitting rhymes about love, life, Hip-Hop, Politics, and many other deep topics. Binary Star released their breakthrough album Waterworld in 1999 (If you can ever find this rare OOP album for a reasonable price BUY IT, it is going for over $100 on the internet.) Next came the classic Masters of the Universe, this Binary Star album released in 2000 is the quintessential "underground" hip-hop album. One Man Army and Decompoze parted ways, because of a rock band having the same name One Man Army had to change his name to One Be Lo and he began his solo career. One Be Lo came out with Project F.E.T.U.S. in 2003, a rough cut but still an excellent album. Finally in 2005 One Be Lo released S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., jam-packed with 22 tracks and 68 minutes of the best music I have ever heard. Here are some lyrics to the song Axis. It was difficult for me to pick lyrics to share with you because all of them are profound and powerful. "See in America they flamed bottle rockets when slaves was not abolished Slayed a lot of fathers and raped a lot of mommas Them days cotton products, we blame our modern problems New ways they got us bondaged, the chains is psychologic The media be feedin us napalm atomics While the schools brainwash us, the crayons is toxic Don't believe the hype, they can save all the drama Cause them apes not evolving, I can't swallow ya vomit My rights as a human they change laws in congress Now Shaytan [Satan] in office, we can't call him honest What part of the game do they play, cops or robbers? In this land of Pocahontas, natives lost to conquest Your false gods get framed, buffed and polished If you ask who the prophet, they say Nostradamas (who?) No ways of Muhammad, no pray five at Kabbah Definition of a terrorist, they call Islamic So many brothers puzzled and can't solve they problems Smuggle crack, juggle rap, or play ball in college But Uncle Sam, hustle man, take all your dollars Break y'all, sink them 8-balls in your pocket I'm chosen like Moses, here to take y'all to promise My +Quest+ started when Tip say "Lost my wallet" We all gotta get it, the mules, acres was promised But the skeletons came out the closet Now some of y'all black folks is still patriotic Dyin in wars, so who you think make the profit?" 1. Talks about the underground hip-hop movement, propaganda, the bad situation of the ghetto, politics, love, life, capitalism, drug-dealing and living life in the fast lane, and of course a few tracks calling all other MC's whack. One Be Lo is different from the mainstream because he does not swear, disrespect women, or rap about being a millionaire. BEST ALBUM!Read full review
If youre into Binary Star(One Be Lo & Senim Silla), then you will love this album. Put together very well and you can tell OBL spent some time on these tracks. Definitely a few messages in it if you can pick them up, but it will probably take a few listens. Overall, one of the better records that i have in my hip-hop collection. If you like this, also pick up Project: F.E.T.U.S. by One Man Army. I recommend this album to anyone who loves hip-hop to the fullest extent. This is not your typical radio broadcasted artist, this is General Subliminal.
