Another Saxon CD for me to review. I already have several reissue versions of this album but as a collector wanted to get hold of this original EMI pressing. This is probably the album that started to split Saxon's core audience back in 1984. I had only 'discovered' the band about 18 months prior to this release and was extrememly happy with it. For some older fans though, who had lived through the triple whammy of Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather, it was far to 'Americanized' and 'Lightweight' It was partly due to changing musical attitudes and partly due to interference from their record label that caused the shift in sound and it was a case of stick with them to see what happens next (which is what I did, Saxon becoming my Favourite Band), or move on to find something else. To be fair the album as a whole is not Saxon's best, although I imagine if the production had been handled differently then the songs might have sounded 'meatier'. As mentioned earlier, interference from EMI wanting the band to try and appeal more to an American audience didn't help and the band was pushed into playing a style they were perhaps not particularly comfortable with. Songs with titles such as Sailing to America alienated people as well, although had they listened properly to the lyrics, would have seen that it was not about leaving the UK behind. Ultimately, the shift in style worked against the band and after a couple more albums they were dropped by EMI amid lineup changes. They now of course are experiencing a huge upsurge in popularity again and have released many fine albums in the intervening years. Whilst Crusader isn't Saxon's strongest album it is certainly still a very good one. The title track, which the band still play live today, is worth the price of admission alone, one of Saxon's very best songs. The artwork has also always been one of my faves, the image of the Crusader on the front, still used as a theme in varying formats by the band today.Read full review
