Marillion's first album in the new millenium 'Anoraknophobia' came after a string of three albums in the late 90's where the band was looking for a new musical sound and leave behind the neo-prog rock sound for which they were known in the 80's and early 90's. Those 3 albums from the late 90's were 'This Strange Engine'(1997), 'Radiation'(1998), and 'Marillion.com' (1999). On those three records Marillion were looking for a new sound/identity while keeping their prog rock ethos, but those albums where uneven and had more of a modern pop rock influence on them. With 2001's 'Anoraknophobia' Marillion finally found the sound they were looking for and produced one of the most amazing records in their catalogue. The album has a great flow soundwise and it opens with the rocking "Between You and Me" followed by the more proggy "Quartz". "Map of the World" is a pop rock tune that would have been a hit in a better world. "When I Meet God" is one of the most beautiful songs the band has written and it is one the highlights on this album and my personal favorite. Track #7 "This is the 21st Century" is the epic on the record and the standout track. I would have ended the album with this epic, but then there's the last song "If My Heart Were a Ball It Would Roll Uphill" that, although by no means is a bad song, it feels like it's a song too many on this record. But this is just a minor gripe of mine. The important thing is that 'Anoraknophobia' is a wonderfully produced Marillion record that rocks and with a wall of sound that flows beautifully. I bought it because it was the one Marillion cd that was missing in my collection and was not disappointed. Highly recommended and a worthwhile addition to your collection if you don't have it already.Read full review
