Fly To The Rainbow, released in 1974, is the second album from German hard rockers Scorpions. It is also on this recording that the band begins to develop their sound that they would keep through out the 1970's. This is due in no small part to the addition of new band members guitarist Uli Jon Roth (a Hendrix fancier) and bassist Francis Buchholz. For those thinking about purchasing this CD, keep in mind that this is not Scorpions at their best. Although, the song "Speedy's Coming" is one of my personal favorites from the band. Bottom line - if all you know is 1980's era Scorpions - don't buy this CD. It will come as too much of a shock to you. If however, you are one of those curious people who want to know what the Scorpions sounded like before you or anyone else ever heard them on the radio in 1979, then what the heck, take a chance, you might like this one.Read full review
The second recording from the Scorpions and it's a good one. Uli Jon Roth is a wonderful guitarist, popular today even though he left the band another two discs down the road. Klaus Meine is young and strong on vocals and the rest of the band play well too. The production, by todays standards, could be better but still a great listen.

Don't necessarily think that if you grew up listening primarily to post-1980 Scorpions, you won't like this album as much or perhaps not at all, despite what some fans may say. I enjoyed and liked the Scorps later music while growing up in the early-late 80s. After listening to their first 5-6 albums I now love this period of their music and undoubtedly believe it to be their very best. Every album from Lonesome Crow to Taken By Force is pure gold, especially if you like a heavier sound than later productions. Fly To The Rainbow is what started it all and there isn't a bad song on the album. The fast moving 'Speedy's Coming' grabs your immediate attention as the intro song, and the drawn out masterpiece 'Fly To The Rainbow' concludes this great record. In between you'll find a non-stop barrage of Roth, Heine & Co. on their first full album together. If you enjoy an infusion of psychedelic and middle eastern vibes, more common during the early-70s, you'll love this treasure even more. All in all a great example of a much younger Scorpions looking to establish their sound and not yet boxed in by their own later commercial success.Read full review
