There is nothing to dislike about this album of what can now be deemed classic. Their fourth studio album, featuring THE REAPER, E.T.I., THE REVENGE OF VERA GEMINI, co-written with Patti Smith, and THIS AIN'T THE SUMMER OF LOVE, got them, if they weren't already, noticed. Back when their were sides to albums and cassettes, the opening of side B was SINFUL LOVE, and just groovy to the last groove before the label, ending up with DEBBIE DENISE. In 2001, an expanded version came out which included bonus tracks, one of which was a different take on the title track from their 1981 FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN. It was the same words, but completely different music. There was also a demo of THE REAPER, slightly rearranged and muddy sounding, although retouched digitally, and although gone are the early days of plastic-and-metal-based tape and the hiss from the friction of the tape constantly moving along the metal play heads of sound equipment. Blue Oyster Cult is the thinking man's heavy metal band. Of course, there is the obvious cultural reference point of "Don't Fear the Reaper" but Agents of Fortune is much more than that. "This Ain't the Summer of Love" is not only a great song but also a fitting headstone for Woodstock Nation. The dream may have died but not the power of the music. "The Revenge of Vera Gemini" is a sinister tale featuring guest singer Patti Smith, appropriately hissing her female duet. "Sinful Love" is another classic. There are no bad songs on this album. Not only do the duel guitar thrash metal instrumentals hit on every cylinder but a quick review of the lyric sheet provides even more pleasant surprises. These guys did not flunk English or history (or probably anything else for that matter). Music by and for guys with brains who still fully intend to get the girl. Great music for the intended girl targets, too. Not every metal band has punk priestess Patti Smith on board. If you like rock 'n' roll at all, you should love this album!Read full review
