Blue Oyster Cult, has always been one of my favorite bands. Mostly because they never fell into the overly-commercial "love song" genre, a hole that nearly all "big" bands eventually fall into. Their subject matter is always goth and different, and this one doesn't disappoint. Another of those rare CD's that you can just "let play" no skipping songs is required. A little commercial for them, and an obvious attempt to capture the popularity of Agents of Fortune (Don't Fear the Reaper) but just stunning in it's imagery. Fire of Unknown Origin is the opening salvo before the hit Burning for You, which was actually penned by Roeser and was set to be on his solo album, but persistant harping by Bloom got it to appear here (he KNEW it was gold) "Buck" is at his best on this one, learn to play the lead line from this and you'll develop a new respect for him. Veteran of the Psychic Wars follows that and sounds way ahead of it's time, like the soundtrack to a video game or something. "After Dark" rules and Joan Crawford (has risen from the grave) manages to be both amusing and macabre, a blend they hit often but never better than this. If you even remotely like this band, THIS is the CD you should start with.Read full review
The best Blue Oyster Cult offering... Great variety of tunes and awesome cover-art. This release found the band at the top of their commercial success and it has the Top 40 Hit, 'Burnin' for You' as well as 'Veteran of the Psychic Wars', which was featured on the Heavy Metal Soundtrack. 'Joan Crawford' is a spooky track and completes the album's greatness. I highly recommend buying this CD.
Some obvious classics here burning for, veteran of the psychic wars etc. Great radio friendly hard rock with interesting themes. The disc I picked up was new, but the sound quality was seriously lacking. If you want these songs you are better off getting them on "telescopes" or one of the other remastered packages. Really an underestimated band compared to the stuff from today, they could play.. and sing, what a combo. Check out veteran of the psychic wars in the wonderful animated flick "Heavy Metal".
Good memories from my teenage years! :) I had the cassette and decided to buy ths CD after more than 20 years!!! I had my sister listen to it as well, since it was her cassette that I used to listen too.
After reading the other reviews of this CD, I had to point out the lyrics (and music) to 'Sole Survivor'. If you liked the macabre 'Twilight Zone' with Rod Serling from TV's golden era, you'll love this song. The sole survivor of nuclear war, in the end when a spaceship comes to save him, hides from them in fear, thus losing his only chance at rescue. The title track is also excellent.
