This album is one of my favourite NIN albums, aswell as 'The Downward Spiral'. It is kind of like Trent Reznor and the gang have reached their peak and they decided to produce their 'fine' work. It reminds me of when U2 produced their so called 'divine' era of CD's, and I am stronly opposed to those that say this album was soul-less...they have obviously missed the point. Firstly, if you don't like NIN, don't buy this, as a few tracks can get very in your face, but its graceful roughness, so for those that like to try new things, or have an open mind, buy it!!! buy it!!! The album is non stop eclectic/refined underground/industrial and mixed in with a lot of class and finesse as Trent Reznor again pushes the boundries on what he considers life. The whole feel is very 'msytic', almost like you've stepped into a gothic cult with one of the best musicians that industrial has to offer. What I love most about Reznor is that he just writes his lyrics from the heart and without restraint, which is clear on some of the obviously offensive tracks. But they are only offensive if you want them to be. Its best to listen to them with an open mind and as always, the larger of his audience are young, being that they relate best to his corrupted innocence, and lack of care towards the every day. The guitars/drums and occasional synthesizing of his tracks, and the wonderful piano playing that is thrown in, sends chills down your spine as he takes you on a ride of morbid degeneration, then manages to settle you down with very very powerful songs such as 'the great below', which is much more complex than the average listener might think. You can take it in many ways, but the whole song is aimed towards a different lifestyle, one where you don't dress up all in black to fit in, or take drugs to make you feel better, but more to show you that we are all in the same life, and no matter what god/belief we hold true, we are all the same. I call his enchanting industrial melodies the 'love songs', and to these slow and deep lyrics I love to just close my eyes and open my mind to his songs. I hope this review is helpful.Read full review
This is THE album that got me hooked on NIN. Very unique sound. There's heart-pounding rock songs down to gloom-filled tear-makers. Eventually I build up a huge collection of Trent's work and I made the mistake of taking it to work once and much to my regret it was stolen. Starting from scratch. I boxed framed my Lights In The Sky Tour tickets with The Slip Limited release CD and Tour Poster. I've been to many band's concerts and MANY of NIN's as well and that BY FAR was the BEST THING THESE EYES HAVE EVER SEEN! Get two of these if possible, just as I did. One to have and the other to never open. This album to me represents Trent's musical mastermind and peak of creativity. Go to a very quiet room, turn off the lights, close your eyes, and put on those headphones! WORTH EVERY SINGLE CENT!Read full review
Came in excellent condition, plays perfectly. Great, dark NIN.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
This is an excellent release (as one should expect) from Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails. While not as iconic as some early releases, this is a great compilation showcasing a variety of styles. The two CD set is a bonus and includes several worthy tracks; there is no "filler" here. If you are looking to add to your NIN collection, or simply want to get started and want a good sampling of this band's eclectic style, this is an excellent choice.
The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails is one of my favorite albums and hits home with Reznor's use of loud synths and soft piano accompanied by lyrics that scratch the very backbone of the concept of thought. I purchased this album after I heard La Mer and decided to give this a shot and have to say that I have never been more pleased with my purchase!
