Notes
2017 release. Freedom Highway is Grammy Award-winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens' follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes it's name. Giddens co-produced Freedom Highway with multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell in his Breaux Bridge, Louisiana studio, with the bulk of recording done in wooden rooms built prior to the Civil War. As producers, Giddens and Powell sought to release the stories already in the walls, allowing the space to be a voice in itself. This approach allowed for an emotional fearlessness and presence not always easy to achieve in the studio. Together they assembled the players, which included her superb touring band, local musicians from the bayou, a soulful horn section from New York, and talented family members. The principle recording was done over an intense eight day period. The result is an album that is rawer and more personal than it's predecessor.
I had never heard of this artist until I saw her on PBS a few weeks ago (pretty normal for me; if it's anything newer than James Taylor chances are I don't know anything about it lol). I enjoyed it so much that I bought her CD. I can't stop playing it. Rhiannon has a beautiful voice with a Joni Mitchell-esque quality, yet unique and captivating. I'm not sure what "genre" this artist fits into, maybe a little of everything. you will definitely hear influences from folk and blues, and maybe even a hint of old school blue grass and Motown, along with a couple of ballads that are overwhelmingly soulful, thought-provoking, and sexy. Some of the songs are reminiscent of early Bob Dylan protest songs while staying positive and victorious in nature. Ms. Giddens' songs seem to tell stories of people and places I will have to research to understand, but what I can tell you for sure is that this music and this artist will be extremely famous and increasingly significant to the music world in general. Of course it doesn't hurt anything that Ms. Giddens is classically beautiful to look at and has a great band, but this CD is hauntingly insightful and addictive and a must have if you appreciate and enjoy what will prove to be timeless music that will touch your heart and convict your soul.Read full review
I'm an "old folkie" who was delighted to discover Rhiannon Giddens a few years ago. Her singing and especially song-writing sometimes gives me the kind of "tingles" I used to get 50 years ago when I discovered a new, powerful, talented artist. I don't buy many CD's anymore, but this one I had to add to my collection.
