Love Devotion Surrender is an amazing CD by John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana. This project was strongly related to their spiritual association with Sri Chinmoy. McLaughlin's solo on "The Life Divine" (second solo after the middle of the piece) is in my opinion one of the most amazing electric guitar solos ever played. This remastered CD offers two extra outtakes of "A Love Supreme" and "Naima", however it mentions "vintage photos inside" while there is only one b&w head photo of Santana. That's it. Also, the long "Love Devotion Surrender" essay by Sri Chinmoy is absent, replaced with an overblown praising review of the work. The original album had two more photos of the duo together with Chinmoy. This album has to be listened together with a reading of Chinmoy's essay, as it's the main parts of the message conveyed with the improvisations. Musically, the album is an absolute mystical and fourth-dimensional opus. The version of "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord" is an absolute mesmerizing trip. Larry Young gets the Hammond sound like a synthesizer. This piece may be hard to listen to the first time, it was for me. It's necessary to immerse into the kaleidoscopic trip this long improv offers. A fantastic collaboration indeed! Recommended for adventurous listeners.Read full review
I'm a big fan of albums such as Santana III, Caravanserai and Welcome. I'd argue Santana's at his best when he has a beautiful melody to use as a basis for improvisation, such as Samba Pa Ti , Song of the Wind or Europa. Despite his professed love for Miles and Coltrane, he is not, by training, a Jazz player and when confronted by the material on this album, his deficiencies rather than his strengths are rather painfully highlighted. Needless to say, Mclaughlin has no problems in this regard and the contrast between the two players is pretty stark-- one, aimlessly riffing, constantly struggling to find a toe-hold and the other burning effortlessly. To my ears, Carlos fares somewhat better on his meeting with McLaughlin on the Welcome track "Flame Sky". I recognize that this is a minority opinion, though-- a lot of people seem to really enjoy this. Read full review
