I've waited to buy this cd because it is often rated as the worst Dio album. It was surprisingly good. I'm pleased to include it in my collection and recommend it for anyone who likes their music heavy. It's an absolute must for any hard-core fan of Ronnie James Dio as a singer or as a songwriter. As painters go through different "periods" so do music artists. There is one song on the album that is quite a departure for Ronnie James Dio and rather out-of-place on this album and it grabbed me right away. In fact, I've listened to it several dozens of times already. "This is Your Life" is a ballad but it has a dirge-like sound. It's brilliant. The lyrics are beautiful and Dio's voice is very expressive. It's both inspirational and heartbreaking at the same time. I wish there was a video for this. It's an amazing song that just keeps getting better with every listen. The rest of the album is quite good musically. It's stylistically different Dio, not in the same vein as most of the other albums from the group or from Ronnie James Dio, but it's good stuff nonetheless. Most of the songs are very heavy. This is not Dio light. Most of the songs could be called Dio angry, which explains the title of the album. There is a different kind of darkness to this album. It's dark and very heavy but it's not Sabbath-dark, it's more hopelessness dark. The songs are almost oppressive. It isn't the inspiring Dio we are used to, but it's still very powerful. Where Dio albums usually warn of some pitfall or danger to human existence, good vs evil, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. In "Angry Machines" there is no light. It's almost a cloying album, uncomfortable and depressing. The music is unrelenting. Just listen to the drums. This might well be Dio's 'Gloomy Sunday', which is probably why fans find it most disturbing. This music is good but it you do not feel better after listening. As I said, a different kind of darkness. Remember, the artist is just the messenger here. Dio is only depicting that which he sees. There is no glamorizing or fantasy in this album. It's brutally honest. "Angry Machines" is very underrated. It may be Dio's most evocative album yet. What it evokes however, is not sweetness and light. Far from it.Read full review
This is the only cd that I have heard from Dio that does not sound like any of the other ones, but it is still excellent all the way through. I have never heard him do any of these songs live, I wish that I did. These songs have a little bit of a harder edge to them than some of his other work, but not all of it. If you want a diferent sounding Dio than most of his other work, then you need to get this cd, you will not be disappointed.
Aside from the fact it arrived earlier than usual, it was packaged well and was what I could have expected and even more.

Superb offering by Ronnie James Dio and his group at a time when Metal was at a popular lull. Thus, a new freedom in songwriting and manner of musicality was delivered! These songs aren't stadium grinders. Rather, more creative subtlety and direct expressiveness occurs here. Dio seems very at ease in his art at this point in his career. God rest his soul. Practical musical coolness ensues from the bands' counterpart, throughout.
