Another Rhino collection of 120 girl group songs. I never heard about 100 of these songs before. I put together a 23 song playlist which is excellent. Several well-know artists performing songs that never made the charts. Hats off to Rhino for finding these songs and assebling this collection. Also, a very unique box for the 4 CD's and an excellent book with a one page write-up for each song.

The four CD box set "Girl Group Sounds" unearths long lost girl group gems. If you're a fan of this early '60's sound, you'll be sorry if you don't dig deep enough to treat yourself to a copy! Aside from the novel, if not somewhat cumbersome and clunky hat box packaging, the four CDs are housed in easy-to-damage cardboard (girls' makeup) compacts. That's the worst thing I can say about this treasure trove of delights. The accompanying book/booklet is written in a diary with enlightening anecdotes about the music within. And what music it is! I found half of the tracks to be essential to my collection, though the remaining half has plenty of appeal, too! My collection wouldn't be the same without such gone but not (now) forgotten goodies such as Rolling Stones' written "I'd Much Rather Be with the Girls" by Donna Lynn; Motown sound alikes "The Trouble With Boys" by Little Eva (of "The Locomotion" fame), "If There's Anything Else You Want (Let Me Know)" by Roddie Joy, and "May My Heart Be Cast Into Stone" by The Toys (although it sounds like a needle drop -- mastered from the original vinyl long after the master tapes had been discarded); personal favorite "Let Me Get Close To You" by country artist Skeeter Davis; Phil Spector sound alikes "That's When The Tears Start" by The Blossoms (featuring Uncle Phil's own Darlene Love) and "Dream Baby" by Cher; Motown's own Ashford & Simpson written "A Friend Of Mine" by The Geminis; B-52s prototype written by Lou Christie "Egyptian Shumba" by The Tammys; "My Boyfriend's Back" copycats The Pin-Ups performing "Lookin' For Boys"; "I Never Dreamed" by The Cookies as well as their recording of "She Don't Deserve You" masquerading as The Honey Bees; Goldie & The Gingerbreads' delightful "Walking In Different Circles"; the "Leader of the Pack"-styled drama of "Daddy You Gotta Let Him In" by The Satisfactions and "Nightmare" by The Whyte Boots; plus upbeat treats like "Ain't Gonna Kiss Ya" by The Ribbons, "Mister Loveman" by Yvonne Carroll, and the classic "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" by The Starlets (although improperly credited to Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles on 45). "Girl Group Sounds" whets my appetite for more by well known artists, such as The Shangri-Las, The Angels, Lesley Gore, The Chiffons, The Shirelles, Connie Francis, and the Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys) produced Honeys. Though a few Motown tracks appear (by Mary Wells, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Syreeta Wright, The Velvelettes, and The Darnells and their better known monikor of The Marvelettes and a pre-Motown Brenda Holloway), Phil Spector produced recordings do not, presumably due to licensing restrictions; so no Ronettes, Crystals, nor solo Darlene Love. Fortunately, all are available elsewhere. But where does one go to find the one hit wonders, such as The Flirtations ("Nothing But A Heartache"), the California surf sound of Susan Lynne's "Don't Drag No More", and a girl group performance by the one and only Dolly Parton ("Don't Drop Out")? (Yes, that Dolly Parton! Of course, she eventually went on to become a very successful country and pop music legend.) The 4 CDs you get here will leave you longing for four more discs of girl group goodies. There's so many outstanding recordings here that it makes me wonder when another box set will be released to unearth more buried treasures.Read full review
I usually don’t write a review but this box is a must have. The songs are well put together from early to the lastest. Again great box set and I definitely recommend this anyone.
