Carroll wrote most of the lyrics over a 5-10 span of time. The spiritist lyrics, the fast paced punk music, the feel of not being of the eighties, or the seventies, but some eternal limbo in between. A lot of covers of the songs have been preform in the 27 years since this album came out. I bought the day I saw Jim read from his Forced Entries book back in 1988. But it's the song "Catholic Boy" that truly shines as a rock n' roll song, and a punk version of spiritualist beliefs. Not an easy combination, and there has never been a song quite like it again. "I understand the fate all my enemies just like Christ in the garden of Gethsemane" It's a song and an album that writes hatred & brutality with centuries old Catholics, that emphases poverty, charity, and the hair shirt. It inspires the spiritualist in you if you listen to the lyrics. They are true, and ironic at the same time. " . . . Catholic Boy, I was redeemed through pain, not through joy." I think that says it all.Read full review
